Bloo Loo
By this you assume that anyone in the public sector is knowingly rob money from ordinary 'wealth creators' (I have such a problem with that phrase). The vast majority are just earning a crust mate. Bankers actually know what they're doing and don't give a ****. As has been pointed out, reform is needed. What we'll get is far more austere. well, you voted the frackers in.....bankers get away with it because of Government. Public sector is unsustainable because of Government. Private sector is dying because of Government. The cause is Bad Government, indeed, Democracy itself....its why we have spineless, opinionless politicians. Then again, they dont need an opinion..they just need to cover for the people paying their bills for re-election. favours for favours... tomandlu
Always be wary about supporting one thing simply because it seems opposed to something else that you don't like (not that I'm against the public sector but there is still far, far too much waste in it). The enemy of my enemy is not always my ally. You misunderstand - I'm not talking about something symbolic or about sharing the pain. I'm saying if we hit the public sector before sorting out the elite, then that's it. Game over. They will have won.

These men promptly escaped from maximum security coroporate boardroom to the London finance underground. Goat
Quite right I did stuff stuff up my post I failed to make my self clear in the first place and the more I try to correct it the worse it gets. The only way out of this now I is to put it down to the Bushmills. Am I your new hobby now catching me out and tripping me up? If you're going to run around calling people turkeys becuase they don't have public sector style defined benefit pensions and aren't putting 40% of their income into a private scheme then don't be surprised to be challenged. You should be a teacher you Know. I understand they pay a very good pensions I could never get used to the Corduroy.

robo1968
...many teachers have never left a school / uni environment ...how could they expect to be aware of the world outside....?.... I am in complete agreement, when I was at Uni (or big school as we preferred to call it) the previous years graduates were partly involved in the teaching.... it is like ever decreasing circles.. I want my son to be taught by someone else with real world experience, how can he get that from an aged student?

billybong
Sure there must be examples but I don't see them and the companies I know and have worked in can't afford dead wood. My point is there is always some choice Completely agree, that's why I read what people write on here and comment. When you see the margins some retailers / distributors and manufacturers actually work on you might find it is hardly a rip off at all. 20% is high in my industry, that is if the customer has decided to keep the product after they have had it for a week, they can send it back if they don't and get a full refund Wish I could say the same for my Income and council tax I quite agree that the private sector in general is far less likely to accept overmanning etc. My point is though that it's not only the public sector that's prone to overmanning etc these days but there are areas in the private sector with similar problems/policies. I think it's clear that the public sector is worst by a long chalk with diversity this that and the other etc etc etc. With the larger/large private sector companies likely there's a "back scratching mentality with government possibly partly to help massage the employment figures. Likely it's something to do with government and the corporates power merging. I hold no brief for the public sector (or the private sector for that matter) but I'm merely commenting on what I've observed. Point taken re income and council tax Edited December 2, 2011 by billybong
Si1
Are you telling me that raising the retirement age will not have an effect on youth unemployment in the future? it is a solid theoretical and empirical fact that raising the retirement age leads to HIGHER employment levels in the younger generations, because of the extra work done in the economy (by more proficient experienced staff) which itself creates more demand and therefore jobs

I'm really looking forward to the next two/three years which will finally put to bed the many missguided notions such as those stated above.
