I just gave in and downloaded explorer 8. It asked if I had any comments. Can't help wondering if this is for my benefit or yours, says I, noticing among all the small print of the license agreement numerous references to what I'm doing being sent to various providers to help improve my browsing, searching and just day to day living experience.

I have become not just a sceptic but totally cynical about virtually every large institution I am obliged to deal with - government, retailers, financial services (no kidding), you name it. They all seem to be out to [insert acceptable word] us.

Is it just me? Or is this paranoia becoming the norm? And if so, where will it take us? Somewhere quite dangerous is my feeling. This disconnect between the leaders and the led cannot be healthy.

Not sure I'd characterise it as paranoia in my case, but I have a general loathing of dealing with the organisations you list for the reasons you mention. Some places are great though, which is why it is important that they get the business.

That sensation you are feeling is only called paranoia if it is unfounded

And it's perfectly healthy

Certainly in comparison with blind, unquestioning faith in the motivations and capabilities of those who seek influence over your life

There are a lot of people talking about your paranoia behind your back.

The price of freedom is eternal vigilance

...and a catering-size roll of bacofoil

The Corporation is a 2003 Canadian documentary film written by Joel Bakan, and directed by Mark Achbar and Jennifer Abbott. The documentary is critical of the modern-day corporation, considering its legal status as a class of person and evaluating its behaviour towards society and the world at large as a psychiatrist might evaluate an ordinary person. This is explored through specific examples. Bakan wrote the book, The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power, during the filming of the documentary.
