Ground To Air Missiles For Olympics

Apparently security is a bit of an issue with the USA. And we may deploy ground to air missiles too.

Looks like I'll be installing chaff then.

So what are they going to do to protect against explosive packed cars/vans/trucks etc that have almost unlimited access to the site?

Bunch of berks.

You say "the USA have got the hump". Don't know what that is all about.

Lord only knows what the US and UK intelligence services know.

Well if any terrorist groups are planning an attack you can be sure that they are already have the operatives and the gear here as they have had years to prepare.

Of course, the relaxation of passport controls in the summer will have made their entry that much easier. Which does make you rather wonder what exactly has been going on at the Home Office since in the run upto the Olympics you would have thought they would have been tightening up border procedures in advance of the event.

The Guardian claimed the US was furious about security plans and wanted to send up to 1,000 of its own people, including 500 FBI agents but the Home Office says it has "full confidence" in the plans.

That bit in particular.

It is not normal for the USA to be furious enough to want to send its own people in those sorts of numbers.

Deploying surface to air missiles in one of the most crowded airspaces in the World? Should be interesting.

Fire and forget anyone?

And with all those houses below too. But it will give the daily wail a chance to say "downed aircraft lands on £750,000 home".

It's good to know the price of the home.

Does the UK actually have any effective (preferably combat-proven) surface-to-air missiles?

We don't often fight wars in which the enemy's "air-force" isn't bombed to bits on the ground in the first 5 minutes, so I suspect our SAM-buying budget is pretty small. One of my memories from watching the Falklands war on TV is that our SAMs at the time were a bit rubbish.

The US is well aware of the dangers that Londinistan presents thanks to years of slack border controls and the welcoming of foreign terrorists into the UK.

Agreed, this whole story is 100% bo11ocks.

SAM = short range so if they did manage to shoot anything down it would still land on london causing just as much damage as if they hadn't bothered.

If they're serious about this they'll have a pair of interceptors 24/7 doing laps of London at 35,000 ft so they can stop any threat before it gets to the city.

Not so sure tbh. Find it hard to believe that this would get into the press if true.

But starstreak and rapier both have ranges of about 7k so not too short a range if positioned right. Problem is they will be panicking about a passenger jet being used more than likely and since that wold already be in the area heathrow/gatwick/stanstead then all would be fubar.

Lets face it though, the likelyhood of a 911 rerun is pretty slim and if we couldnt stop paddy and murphy parking up cars and lorries full of shit that would go bang then maybe we should be asking the yanks for 1000 spooks, lol

It won't happen as long as people have a memory of 9/11. 200 people on a plane and 4 blokes take you all hostage and tell you to sit still and we are off to land somewhere else. I don't think if they were even holding weapons it would make any difference. At least 50 people on the plane would think to themselves 'ram this' and just go straight for them. No chance it will happen again in the near future. It is suicide for these people and without the outcome they want. Which makes the suicide pointless. Not worth doing.
