It's pretty simple - if you don't have the right pieces of paper, you can't do the job you want.

Unless you are willing to go completely blind and go straight self employed after school or something, but folks with that tolerance for risk are rare as ****** (and usually backstopped by fairly well off parents even then.)

What I would say to someone young....take ( business ) risks when you are young, energetic and have nothing to loose. If it doesn't work out you then you have the time and energy to start again. Dont wait till your 30.

According to EU stats this is the top ranked country for ease of doing business. A quick call to the HMRC to tell them you are a sole trader, and off you go.

All the 'oooh - you need rich parents', 'aaaaah you need a degree' whiners are making their own excuses for having neither the nouse or the balls.

F*ck degrees. I've done hundreds of sales pitches, and I can count the number of times I've been asked about my academic achievements on no hands.

Yes, and theres no reason for students (who want to access restricted markets) to protest for the removal of any legislation.

Can you imagine a doctor upon passing his finals then turning around and saying "actualyl it'd be better for everyone if anyone who wanted could just set themselves up as a quack" or similar?

Never going to happen. So we are as doomed as ******, frankly. We need free markets, we won't get them until after a full blown catastrophe wipes the old slate clean.

some doctors remain quacks and are totally useless, even with the qualies.

yes, that phone call will automaticalyl give you the behaviours, timing, insight and market knowldge you need to become successful.

Funny how they don't have the nouse despite all that education, isn't it?

Well it doesn't take much to show a hyper aggressive randian nutter where the door is, does it?

...so let's just sit on our arses and winge, or smash up Fortnums because that cushy public sector job we presumed we would wander in to suddenly looks doubtful.

No mystery at all after 13 years of Edukashun x 3. Not funny, at all.

I've got about a 75% success rate in getting business from first introduction. Most of it now is through recommendations, anyway.

Wrong, wrong, wrong Injin.

They are in the position they are in because another group will do something similar. That's statism for you.

But it's their fault right?

Awesome, and you do realise that means you stop an equivalent amount of business done by others by being in that position, right?

Right?

young folks almost by definition know ****** all. They go off authority, received wisdom, parental advice, what they learned at school etc etc What else are they going to do? Pull an entirely different system of ethics and social discource out of heir left **** cheek on the bus home from secondary school?

You expect too much of people with absolutely zero reason to. The system captures 95%+ of humanity. Getting away means you are abnormal.

What a miserable outlook. Is that the excuse you live by?

Still, 40'000 posts worth of attention seeking self affirmation must help...

Gotta go. Work. :) You done your two hours worth this week yet?

Nope, I escaped. I just recognise that most people are incapable of doing so.

oh, no this is an ethology of those able to see beyond basic propaganda.

Gotta go. Work. :) You done your two hours worth this week yet?

Nah, got a full thursday/friday this week.

You have fun paying off your perceieved debts.

You seem a little confused.

They're the ones matching against their masters.

You're the one sitting at home with the boot of the same masters upon your forehead, and seemingly enjoying it?

Rubbish. These protesters haven't got a clue. They're the sort who like the idea of higher taxes, more government spending, more government debt, a bigger state and more interference from our political masters and their technocrats, and of course with more debt more control to the financial markets where it is raised.

But that's all above their heads. Waaaay above them.

The next call to the commercial property agent for the premises is the shocker.

And then the bills come rolling in.

You know you are "in business" then.

Looks like I won the drivers-pay-for-roads argument. B)

It's pretty direct funding - especially fuel duty which is a linear charge on usage.

Don't try the socialist strawman crap - a road network is one of the few things that should be organised centrally.

Nah. People cant be bothered pointing out that it is Council Tax that pays for road repairs so everyone including non drivers pay. We've had this discussion before.

There does seem a sense of entitlement...a sense of...it is my right turn to go to uni.

The worst Labour did for poor people was to give them hope.

Corrected for you.

It's unfair treatment to pull the plug on this generation alone, whilst the ones who went for free reap all the rewards such as HPI, better jobs, better employment prospects, benefits for the middle class who don't need it etc. etc.

From paper comments

To those of you harping on about the evilness of capitilism and how we should just be taxing the mega rich to pay "their due" they already do pay their due 50% of what they earn in fact goes into taxes. Sure they keep hgetting richer but hey hum. There has to be a society where people aspire to better themselves not just looking on enviously at those above them saying "wheres my bit" Its not the Mega rich who is stopping people from making lots of money in todays society its themselves. there are lots and lots of examples of people who have come from nothing to make a lot of money. and is for " no to capitilism" well you are a few thousand years too late and did i see that they are now selling anti capitalist hoodies and t-shirts now..?? hope they see the irony of that.

The above poster doesn't 'get it' - neither do a load of the finance press that i've read blurbing in their blogs
What the rich-super rich have done is give everyone the 'illusion' they are paying 50% but on how much of their income?
They hide the fact that they are tax avoiding, trusta-funding and have off-shore ltd companies set up to take as much out of Blitish Society as they can get away with - all underlayed by bent tax laws set up for the rich - stuck thru Parliament bills by the Lords looking after their own!
That is what is wrong with todays "Capitalism" - offloading losses and more of the tax burden onto middle/working class whilst the greediest Bstards grab ever more of the pie even when they bust their own thieving mechanisms.
That is the fund-a-mental underlaying cause of societal mis-management going on in our society today - not Capitalism per se
<_<

UK taxes are not really ring fenced, so taxes all go into and spending comes out of the same pot. Only about 40% of spending by local government comes from council tax, the rest is made up by the Treasury.

Given this setup, arguments about who pays for what via which tax are a waste of time. The pounds don't have barcodes on them. Some people are net contributors and some are net recipients, that's about as far as it goes.

Most people aren't self-employed because self-employment is generally less well paid than the alternative.

Lot's of magical thinking going on whenever anyone mentions 'entrepreneurs'. It's a career choice, but there's nothing particularly special about it.

Personally, I wish I'd gone into medicine.

Dont laugh too hard

Within 5 years yourself , the demonstrators and the coppers on the streets today may be occupying the same trenches and fox holes waiting for incoming fire.

Sorry, you seem to think this is 1911. Think you'll find warfare has changed somewhat in the last century..

Modern state-on-state war is somewhat... quicker...

Because it is interesting, and will pretty much always be in demand regardless of changes in the law or anything else.
