Bunga Bunga Berlusconi To Step Down

Recommended Posts

I think it's a hoax. the biggest Italian newspaper (La Repubblica) which has always campaigned very much against Berlusconi still hasn't reported it on their web site. If it was true they would be the first ones to report it jubilantly with a huge headline!

Edit: actually they mention it but just in passing which means that it's far from sure, with Berlusconi only facts count, believing future plans or promises is a waste of time:

Berlusconi resignation 'denied'

The BBC's David Willey, in Rome, says that although these are unconfirmed reports, it would not surprise anyone to learn that Mr Berlusconi has decided to throw in the towel in the hope that he might get re-elected.

The prime minister, our correspondent explains, knows that there is no real alternative political leader in the country and that a controversial electoral law he passed could help him regain power if the country goes to the polls again.

I could do without Francesca Cipriani and he seems to pay way over the odds.

On a more serious note the Italian treasury this morning auctioned €8.5bn of short-term debt (six-month bills known as BoTs) -- and the interest rate was almost 0.5% higher than at the last comparable auction in September. The latest rate was 3.535%.
