wherebee
S0 - looking at council tax sections of council websites, several have this sort of thing: Class H - Held for minister of religion This class applies to an empty dwelling, which is held as available for occupation by a minister of any religious denomination. Make an application for exemption under Class H anyone actually used this? You can get evidence of being an ordained minister from any one of a number of organisations pretty easily... What about renting it to a student you know personally for nothing (one you know that will not actually live there) so you can get the student exemption. I AM happy to exploit a stupid legal exemption for believers in sky fairies......
VeryMeanReversion
If the property is empty, you do get 6 months exemption. I've used this a couple of times for genuinely empty properties. (one was in probate, the other being refurb'd).

To be honest matey I think holiday homes should get full Council Tax + extra, especially in areas such as the Lake District, housing that is empty for most of the year does nothing for the local economy and local services
tomandlu
In which case you should sell it and stop hogging property. Second homes/holiday homes are crap for house prices. Are you sure you're on the right forum? A somewhat extreme position. I'd agree that any discount on council tax for second homes makes about as much sense as a chocolate fire guard, but that's hardly the owner's fault. The ability of, up until recently, the middle classes to buy holiday homes, and being able to pay more than a local ftb is a sign of a general dysfunction in the economy and planning system. I'd agree that any discount on council tax for second homes makes about as much sense as a chocolate fire guard, but that's hardly the owner's fault. Fact: 10% discount the norm for most councils, when using MUCH less services The ability of, up until recently, the middle classes to buy holiday homes, and being able to pay more than a local ftb is a sign of a general dysfunction in the economy and planning system. err......or could alternatively be an outcome of a non-socialist economy where some will do better than others through hard work and saving? (assuming not bought with silly credit advances) As other posters have pointed out, council tax arises whether or not it is your sole property (which this one is), and irrespective of the amount of services you actually use. We use it to allow a congruence point for family who are disapora across the world - a meeting place that has a 40 year long history (and memories) in the family. Selling is not on the cards, whether it's priced at 10k or 1M. Anyway, I know the politics of envy will always arise over such things - but have been pleased with the overall balance of comments so far.... Oh Well :(
You can choose to pay business rates on a holiday flat. I do. You then get small business rate relief at 100% and pay no tax at all!!!! Stupid isn't it? Another one of Gordons masterpieces.

What really annoys me was I used to live in the Lake District and the full time community suffers because of weekend tourists in their second homes who do nothing for local services or the economy at large, so yes I believe you should be taxed for a second home, if you can't afford the council tax then don't have one, simples and Dippy I'm no communist

Second homes contribute towards schools shutting, shops closing, services being cut. Remind me why you're on this forum...
