Nasa Reveal New Rocket Design

Recommended Posts

A completely bonkers design, lets have jet engines and propellers together....

If I were trying to get that thing off the ground I'd welcome all the help I could get.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convair_B-36

The B-36 was difficult to operate, prone in its early service years to catastrophic engine fires, electrical failures, and other costly malfunctions. In later years, inaccessible fuel and oil leaks were problems.

.......

With a sufficiently light load, the B-36 could fly at least 10,000 mi (16,000 km) nonstop, and the highest cruising speed of any version, the B-36J-III, was only 230 mph (380 km/h). Turning the jet engines on could raise the cruising speed to over 400 mph (650 km/h), but the resulting higher fuel consumption reduced the range. Hence a 40-hour mission, with the jets used only for takeoff and climbing, flew about 9,200 mi (15,000 km).

Before it even got close to it's target it would be shot down.

Why not just go with more jet engines or just have props.

Although looking at the clip the wingspan looks huge.

Because the design dates back to 1941 when there were no production jet engines. The type was designed around six radial piston engines and the four jet engines were added as an afterthought when they became available.

Is it just me who yawned when NASA unveiled that rocket?

"Here we go again, a nice shiny presentation, no funding, no requirement for it, no chance it will ever get built"

Sorry, I have no idea what that video is supposed to illustrate

Maybe this forum is populated by rocket scientists and I just didn't know it? :D

Seven engines, what a great toy :D.

It brings to mind B-36 (six turning, four burning).

one of the youtube comments

This, my youtube friends, is a proper flying machine.

Nose ready for takeoff!

Radio ready for takeoff!
