Daily Telegraph front page, they are doing a campaign

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/hands-off-our-land/8763931/Hands-Off-Our-Land-the-300000-new-homes-already-in-the-bank.html

Property developers are sitting on more than 300,000 plots with planning permission for new homes, undermining the case for controversial government planning reforms. Campaigners say that the “land banks” are enough for more than two years of house building, meaning there is no need to water down current planning laws.

There is also enough food for 3 months there is no need to farm the land. Let's wait until the surplus is nil before we plant any new crop

300000 is a continual figure for the land bank over several years, the changes are only to change the continual figure to 1M plus. No-one is talking about actually building more houses.

No because very few would be able to afford to buy them or secure the large amount of credit required to borrow to buy them that is before they have even started to save for the deposit.....that is if they have a above minimum wage job to start with. ;)

Surely just having a stipulation whereby planning permission lapsed after 6 months (or a fee of 10% of land value were levied) if building work was not in progress would concentrate minds..

Is this 300,000 plots for family homes bigger than a rabbit hutch? Or just plots for crappy new build shoebox "3 beds" with bonsai size gardenettes, where you can hear your neighbour 3 doors down take a crap?

The latter.

The housebuilders have recently been boasting about how they are selling more to BTL, last time they were in this situation their business and share price fell apart. Good luck ;-).

I was told a while back that you can apply for planning permission for land you don't even own. Does anyone know if this is (or was) true?

Yes. It is true.

But you need to notify the owner that you are applying and confirm on the application form that you have done so.

And of course, you still need the owner's consent to start work, even if you get planning permission.
