A glass ceiling tile smashed in front of London mayor Boris Johnson today as he opened a £1.4 billion shopping centre that is to be a gateway to the London Olympics.

The tile dropped 30ft at the Westfield Stratford City shopping centre in east London near a stage where pop star Nicole Scherzinger had just performed live as part of the star-studded opening ceremony.

Mr Johnson, who had been giving a radio interview at the time, brushed off the incident, saying: "They have worked flat-out down here and whatever has happened over there (where the roof tile fell), I'm sure will be investigated and cleared up as soon as possible."

The building, Europe's largest urban shopping centre, officially opened its doors to the public today.

It is home to more than 300 shops, 70 restaurants, a 14-screen cinema, three hotels, a bowling alley and the UK's largest casino.

I'm surprised this happy news hasn't been reported on here. A mecca to consumerism I wonder how many small retail shops this will shut. Are there any local shops which will be affected by this opening?

The jobs it has created is not a bad thing...but somehow I feel the same and better jobs could have been created investing in other more worthwhile industries with better long-term futures......a gateway to the fortnight Olympics....what then?.....we will always need to buy stuff, the problem being is that there is too much of the same stuff and not enough of the essential stuff this country should be investing in. ;)

This could be ominous. Perhaps like when Sideshow Bob built the damn for Springfield using cheap concrete and did a runner.

Think of all the sub_standard rip-off housing and schools revealed - that killed 10's of thousands after a middling Chinese earthquake!

Wanna buy a Beijing/Shanghai 'high rise' penthouse?

I find it quite disturbing. It shouldn't be possible for a glass tile to fall, let alone a brand new building. It could have been a fataility on day one. But then maybe the media overplayed it and it fell somewhere no people could possible ever be?

It was probably the unexpected wind that caused it, so not their fault.

Count me among the non-cynics. This is really positive for the area and will help avoid turning the Olympic park into a white elephant.

Scary that a ceiling tile could fall though...

What do you think the Olympic park will turn into.....and who do you think will pay the price?

Went to a large town shopping centre in Hertfordshire....all there seemed to be was pound shops, they were all very quiet....the parking cost 70p per hour...all very depressing....will not go again. ;)

The Eastlands commonwealth games site is a decent past comparison. Personally I think its great. I get to whizz around the velodrome once a year for a tenner. No idea if its an economic success, but looking at the waistlines of the locals its not done public health any good.

I'm not sure these things generate much wealth

Afterall if your living in London now you have quite a lot of choice. The shoppers that go to this new centre will just have shaped elsewhere.

The long standing stratford mall right next door will probably be fooked. Who's gona shop in there now?

If they are local shops then the money stays local. If they are chains then the money goes outside the community.

Lewis Hamilton dates her.

Had to look him up on Google.

As the Daily Mash would put it, he's some sort of Forumla 1 car-pointer, right?

Seriously, I had no idea who either them were. I had at least heard the name Lewis Hamilton before.

This is what happens when you don't have a TV or read newspapers.

It's brill. B)

Boris Johnson: 'Westfield is a rebuttal to Geoffrey Chaucer'

Also mentions a big mac is cheaper in Westfield stratford than in Paris.

I think this was all lost on the good people of stratford.

They have been asked where the shoppers will come from both before and after the Olympics. Their answer is - wealthy Europeans on coach trips. I don't see it myself. Very delusional. Meanwhile, 1 in 7 of Britain's shops stand empty. Was any more retail space really needed?

Rioters will need something to loot in the years ahead.

It is good to see the authorities are planning ahead.

I hope the French are not going to come over for cheap booze and fags as they will be dissapointed.
