interestrateripoff
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/jobs/8719784/Graduates-now-more-likely-to-end-up-as-cleaners-official-figures-show.html The number of degree students ending up in low to lower-skilled jobs has grown from 9pc to 17pc over the past 18 years, a fresh analysis by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed. The increase is largely due to the number of people with a degree rising at a faster rate than the number of high-skill jobs available in the UK since 1993, the earliest comparable data, according to the report. One in five graduates now earn less on average than someone educated to A-level standard, while 15pc earn less than those with GCSE or equivalent-level qualifications, the ONS report showed. The findings raise fresh questions over whether the UK's education system is fit for purpose, with almost double the number of degree students ending up in lower-skilled jobs in 2010 compared to 1993. The ONS findings show degree students are now more likely to be working as cleaners, postal workers, hotel porters, secretaries and retail assistants compared to 18 years ago. Bargain and to think from next year you'll be able to graduate with at least £30,000 of debt for you new career as a cleaner.

Good stuff, 5 years of extra post school education to end up pushing a mop around for NMW. Sad thing is they'll be no shortage of suckers lining up to join the party... Snugglybear
Look on the bright side. If this is the case, you get 3+ years of having a good time at college without having to pay for it. You won't be able to afford a decent house or a family, but hey...
OnlyMe
You won't be able to afford a decent house or a family, but hey... Or a job! Door to self employment will be jarred somewhat shut too as all the other commitments will leave you with very little to start off.
aa3
A nation needs large numbers of cleaners. I think a person who does an honest hard job like cleaning should make at least a living wage, if not better. One of the fatal flaws of New Labour's plan to turn all the cleaners into managers was who is going to do the cleaning. They tried to answer that by outsourcing it to firms who hired immigrants. In a socialist utopia no one wants to have their job to clean toilets.

A.steve
If those are the real prospects, the only way to get the loans repaid will be to close the boarders and prevent emigration. If you let people leave, they'll disappear forever. Perhaps the people getting their education now are wider than you give them credit? (Pardon the pun.) In a socialist utopia no one wants to have their job to clean toilets. My grandmother-in law worked as a cleaner, her husband worked in a factory. She got a final salary pension scheme (private company) too as did he. Both the companies they worked for are still going so it must have been affordable for them to pay a living wage and a pension. It is just at some point they were persuaded that doing so was immoral (Friedmanite argument that companies should minimise terms and conditions for workers as they were stealing value from shareholders)

Yes, and probably still be uneducated. £30k of debt and no job, but a broad spectrum of awareness, would be a result. Have you tried to have a conversation with one of today's graduates? Executive Sadman
Intresting factoid in the Mail today was that 48% (ie HALF) of women GRADUATES born from mid 60s to mid 70s are childless. I find that amazing. Just another cost of universities. We keep getting told we need immigrants because we're not reproducing enough ourselves, and university seems to encourage women not to have children. So amazing that it's hard to believe. Looks like women have been sold down the river, as have the children, as have the men! What a shame! Values got perverted somewhere along the way. Not in a 'good' way. Edited August 25, 2011 by tinker
billybong
The ONS findings show degree students are now more likely to be working as cleaners, postal workers, hotel porters, secretaries and retail assistants compared to 18 years ago. It seems to expose the continually repeated lie about the jobs that UK workers don't want to do.

I doubt the survey went further to detail how many of the childless percentage were married or co-habiting?! Thats what i got from the article. Basically they all want some rich guy to come along. Which is ironic, as theyve spend the last 20 years or so pursuing a career to make them rich, and the writer herself says I own my own flat, albeit a humble one. (which probably means some miserable studio in Battersea. 20 years of hard work, and you've got a house too small to bring a child up in. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2029765/Im-childless-I-havent-Mr-Right--hurts-infertility.html

I've read that exactly the same thing is happening to engineering and science graduates in China. GATT has given us a virtually endless supply of labour, this process has just begun IMO. I knew it was high, but half is really stunning. I've seen universities brainwash young women into thinking their role in the world is some noble career.. some women figure out the truth by their early 30's.. but some women dont' figure it out until their mid 40's and its too late then. The prime fertility years for women are like 18-25. Any nation which vallues its women sitting in soem stupid classroom through those years, instead of having kids is a nation which is going to go into severe demographic decline. Self Employed Youth
University seems to be corrupting our young women. The rate of abortions in the youth is another worrying statistic, especially with it being so high and not counting the morning after pill and use of condoms. Seen it happen loads of times. The wallflowers and the don't ask/won't ask brigade get nothing but an admin job for 3 years before job hopping somewhere else.
