One in five graduates now earn less on average than someone educated to A-level standard, while 15pc earn less than those with GCSE or equivalent-level qualifications, the ONS report showed. The findings raise fresh questions over whether the UK's education system is fit for purpose, with almost double the number of degree students ending up in lower-skilled jobs in 2010 compared to 1993. The ONS findings show degree students are now more likely to be working as cleaners, postal workers, hotel porters, secretaries and retail assistants compared to 18 years ago. I think a person who does an honest hard job like cleaning should make at least a living wage, if not better. One of the fatal flaws of New Labour's plan to turn all the cleaners into managers was who is going to do the cleaning. They tried to answer that by outsourcing it to firms who hired immigrants. She got a final salary pension scheme (private company) too as did he. Both the companies they worked for are still going so it must have been affordable for them to pay a living wage and a pension. Which is ironic, as theyve spend the last 20 years or so pursuing a career to make them rich, and the writer herself says I own my own flat, albeit a humble one. I've read that exactly the same thing is happening to engineering and science graduates in China. GATT has given us a virtually endless supply of labour, this process has just begun IMO. I knew it was high, but half is really stunning. I've seen universities brainwash young women into thinking their role in the world is some noble career.. some women figure out the truth by their early 30's.. but some women dont' figure it out until their mid 40's and its too late then. The prime fertility years for women are like 18-25. Any nation which vallues its women sitting in soem stupid classroom through those years, instead of having kids is a nation which is going to go into severe demographic decline. "just until she gets something BETTER" Ahh the old Stop Gap City If you want my advice, she would be better off getting a lower admin job in some midcap and then by force of personality alone could be promoted within a year. Seen it happen loads of times. The wallflowers and the don't ask/won't ask brigade get nothing but an admin job for 3 years before job hopping somewhere else.
