Sovereign Risk Alpha: The Banks Are Bigger Than Many Of The Sovereigns

This is why a few years ago I said America likely can survive this coming crisis, but Europe not so likely. The biggest banks in America like Bank of America at the time only had balance sheets 1/7th the size of the nation's GDP.

Compare to Ireland where its banks were far larger balance sheets than Irish GDP. The Irish state was not able to handle the defaults on the huge balance sheets when they started.
