Facebook Riot Calls Earn Men Four-Year Jail Terms Amid Sentencing Outcry

Two men who posted messages on Facebook inciting other people to riot in their home towns have both been sentenced to four years in prison by a judge at Chester crown court.

Jordan Blackshaw, 20, set up an "event" called Smash Down in Northwich Town for the night of 8 August on the social networking site but no one apart from the police, who were monitoring the page, turned up at the pre-arranged meeting point outside a McDonalds restaurant. Blackshaw was promptly arrested.

Perry Sutcliffe, 22, of Latchford, Warrington, used his Facebook account in the early hours of 9 August to design a web page entitled The Warrington Riots. The court was told it caused a wave of panic in the town. When he woke up the following morning with a hangover, he removed the page and apologised, saying it had been a joke. His message was distributed to 400 Facebook contacts, but no rioting broke out as a result.

This could have far wider implications.

4 years is ridiculous. With a decent Lawyer they will get it down on appeal to a fraction of that IMO.

But it is still pretty worrying.

You hear about the burd who took a pair of nabbed shorts from her housemate ? Was in the house all night of the riots, no arguments from the Police on this count according to what I saw on the news, she simply admitted to accepting the stolen good and had no criminal record at all.

6 months. :o

Piss taking and counter productive.

But the reason why is obvious - fear in the political class.

Indeed. Not that this had much to do with any politics IMO. But in future these sort of riots may do so. Laying down the law to the public about rioting in any way ?

Yep the political elite are getting a little nervous. They know that if the people revolt they won't be able to control it.

Well giving out four year sentences will just make things far worse. Absolutely ridiculous sentence. It just comes across as Scary Police State tactics.

What could they do, if tens of thousands of people all call for riot's on Forums?

That scene from Zhivago springs to mind, where the cavalry mow down the protestors, swords drawn. After they have handed out leaflets.

Major ISP's invite short comments, under Mainstream news articles, on their main pages.

I've noticed they are being censored a lot more, recently. Without explanation. Pretty innocuos comments. It seems Unelected Digital Corporations control Freedom of Speech now.

I paraphrased Bastiat for instance, under an appropriate story, and it was deleted............Repeatedly.

Parliament has created, for themselves over the course of time a legal system that authorizes Plunder, and a moral code that justifies it. The crooked at the top make the ones at the bottom look positively angelic.

I dont think any of you guys realise how easy it is for things to descend into chaos so a clear message is being sent, mess around you will be chucked in the slammer. Couldnt be simpler but like we see throughout life most people dont realise how significant their seemingly insignificant actions can be.

Does this also apply to messing around with the financial system, running systemic ponzi schemes, and threatening martial law if there isn't a bailout?

No doubt we can now look forward to an equally severe crackdown on the News International miscreants.Surely their actions must qualify for at least four years in the slammer? I think there should be a campaign to post online and invite Dave's Gestapo to bang us all up. Ooops! I didn't really mean that Your Honest. The Police State has arrived 27 years late.

The social media element is what has worried them.

We could discuss all sorts on here but have a small number of people here - so are unlikely to create a problem even if we tried hard.

(inciting people to write letters isn't going to get you locked up)

If you can send a message on a system where it could easily spread and create a riot - literally - then you have a system that is scary.

Thankfully most people who wanted to riot weren't sat at home waiting for someone to incite it.

Or not. But you know what I mean.

The internet has morphed from a global *****ing machine into a global spying device.

Those with criminal tendancies will start using paper again...once they realise.
