A credit card bill of £6.5m was run up by staff at a quango tasked with making police forces in England and Wales more efficient, disclosures after a freedom of information request have revealed.

The National Police Improvement Agency (NPIA) incurred the costs in the financial years 2008-9 and 2009-10.

Spending on commemorative coins and karaoke equipment was revealed.

The NPIA said it is "bearing down" on spending but there was a "perception of wastefulness" in its "early days".

It said it had "significantly reduced" the amount spent through the use of credit cards by 33%, from £3.6m in 2009-10 to £2.48m in 2010-11.

Ministers plan to phase out the quango, which was set up in 2007 to help forces in England and Wales to save money.

Its functions will be transferred elsewhere.

Much of the costs by staff at the quango were incurred as a result of train or airline tickets and hotel accommodation for staff who travelled on business.

However, a taxi bill of nearly £100,000 has been revealed along with expenditure on a diverse range of items including £828 on judo apparatus, £105 on pottery, £55 on karaoke equipment - and £28 on lingerie.

£28 on lingerie, I suppose that was someone getting confused with the staff credit card and their own.

I wonder if the £28 was recovered back?

NPIA is a total joke.

should be removed over night. All the coppers sent back to their respective forces to do some real Police work.

All this embarrassment with such expenditure that cannot be justified and high level potential corruption of senior officers it makes the job of the bottom feeder constables even more difficult.

I get more embarrassed about being a DC as each days go by.

Needs the entire system looking at and rebuilding.

Wonder how much less efficient the police would've been without that lingerie...

Shouldnt this be in the main forum as its money being spent and thus part of the economy?

Likewise if I was to replace the word lingerie with underwear for a female, one has to wonder if a female police officer might have been involved in something that caused her trousers and underwear to be ruined, hence wouldnt it be right for the employer to replace them?

It all depends on the reasons why the underwear was purchased. Without this knowledge the statement is just knee jerking a basic response out of the avg reader.

Yes, there is probably a very plausible explanation for all of them. Eg, pinball machine in the recreation area as a reward for improved performance or something.. bit of carrot to go with the stick.

Knickers for £28 though.. we aren't exactly talking M&S 4 pairs for a fiver range are we!

Perhaps if it is combined with a purchase for £100 worth of T-shirts, we can presume they were holding a charity Wet-T-Shirt fund raiser..

Wasnt refering to that and dont intepret my previous comment as being an ok for all the purchases, I'm sure theres been some questionable purchases, its a statistical and psychological certainty depending on the controls in place. Only openess and transparency will solve this.

We dont know what fancy, possibly even kinky underwear some female officers wear to work now do we. Now theres a thought next time we see a female police officer! :D

I've spent a 3 figure sum on a bra and knicker set before for some ex'es and it didnt come from a sex shop either. ;)

I would hope for that price, that you get very little... :D

I'm thinking just the opposite.

I also think sexism would rear it's ugly head....

I take your point on the sexism.. we could roll it out across the board.

Might work even better.. would you commit a crime if you thought this guy might turn up at your front door?..

I'd prefer to be sexist to be honest, much prefer the female look. Although I'm sure certain members (oh god no pun intended) will prefer the male. :)

Although I wonder if the police turned up like that would it defuse the situation?

OIC. :D

Its not a £100k taxi fare, its the total cost of taxis. As usual the absence of some data is causing some people to misunderstand and are being provoked into the wrong response by the BBC.

The BBC are trying to cause a knee jerk reaction.

What the state licenced and enforced propoganda machine needs to do is present the whole facts otherwise their shenannigans will be shown for the worthless of their actions.

I don't think these figures are that outrageous. Business travel is expensive, I regularly fly from leeds and take a taxi for the return trip from my house to the airport. £100 each way, and it's perfectly acceptable.

Think about it laterally....

Could have been replacement underwear if it was damaged in the line of duty...... on a underpants skydive recently, I jumped out and caught my pants on the camera step of the aircraft..

Or it could be as part of a anti kerb crawling thing where WPCs prep a sting pretending to be WGs.

As I was reading your comment, a part of me was hoping you were going to say you used your underwear as a nappy. :D

Nah, a while ago a student REALLY did crap themselves in midair.... thankfully I was out the door AFTER him. The instructor videos show a thin line of brown extruding from his bum.

There is a strong smell of ******** lingering in the air on that one Ken - that's cartoon material surely.

On the subject of knickers - we are assuming that they are officers involved in this topic.

Back in 2003 I pulled a chick who happened to be a police officer, on duty and still in uniform she took me in the panda car to a lay-by where we made out and can attest that they do wear sexy red lingerie underneath - I stole them as a trophy, lol. Naughty me... very naughty her and in a police vehicle tut tut!! Must happen quite alot then.

Unfortunately it isn't! It happened in Empuriabrava this year.

It was just before the Austrians arrived, and it got hot (i.e. jumping in shorts) Dom got ill and passed it on to EVERYBODY and people were jumping and landing and running to the toilets second they landed. It was hilarious to start with then everybody started having to run and use the toilets.

£100 is a little high, but perhaps not unreasonable for an airport run where you are saving on parking costs anyway.

£100K taxi cost.. I would expect the driver to get out at the airport, escort me to a private plane, offer me champagne and £28 nightwear before personally flying me to the destination of my choice.
