Is There A Billy Bragg For This Generation?

Recommended Posts

Is there a singer who sums it up for the current teens? (And I don't want to hear the name Winehouse)

(I also imagine anyone who gets rich singing will also do a BB and move as far away from the maddening crowds at possible)

Are you talking about the same Billy Bragg as me, the socialist who lives in a multi million pound beachfront villa in Burton Bradstock?

The locals can't stop sniggering about it

Did he ever withhold his tax as he declared he was going to?

http://www.guardian....tax-rbs-bonuses

I wrote to Alistair Darling telling him that I would be withholding my taxes on 31 January unless he used our veto to limit the RBS bonuses.

TEN top bosses at bailed out Royal Bank of Scotland will share bonuses of up to £28 million for last year.

Oh I am!

That was kindof my point - is there anyone who in their early years has sung out against the govt (Of course when they get rich they run away to niceland)

I can't think of any political singers at all at the moment.

They're all a bit self self self aren't they?

Billy Bragg's chart success was limited to a few middle of the top 40 singles from the 80s and a few more in the last 10 years or so. I would struggle to describe him as a voice for any 'generation'

On a related note, I was browsing through a book of old press photos at the weekend and I saw a picture of David Bowie performing as Ziggy Stardust in the 70s to a clearly unimpressed audience in a provincial theatre. A few pages later, the Bay City Rollers were pretty much causing a riot in the same town. I wonder how many people at the Bowie concert would now claim that they were always huge Bowie fans and that they saw right through the music industry's commercial machine that periodically spits out bands such as the BCR?

I would hazard a guess that we're still in the afterglow of the Labour super-awesome boom years, and kids are still hypnotised by talentless but visually attractive Cowell-spawned pop-stars in the superficial way they always were.

It will take a few years of genuine hardship for a) someone with genuine talent to get angry enough after having their Sky bill no longer paid by the taxpayer, and B) for others to rally around them with similar grievances.

The Prodigy's album Invaders Must Die in my opinon and are also very prophetic with examples like.

Omen

and

Thunder

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erog0qc1REI

and their new Worlds On Fire album

http://theprodigy.co...gy-music/albums

TBH its all so very prohetic and relevent, just look at diesel power as an example of the superiority of Diesel over Petrol.

IIRC the track Narayan from Fat of the Land talks about the demise of the West and the rise of the East?

How did Bragg get to make millions? Not from sales of his music, surely.

I can't think of anyone who gets close to the hypocritical sanctimony that Bragg manages, with the help of the hotline from the BBC whenever they need a chippy soundbite.

Preaching diversity from his mansion in lily-white Dorset. C**t.

Thanks Bob Loblaw! Wow, the guy from Del Amitri. Their song "Nothing ever happens" summed up Britain to me when I was at school and stands the test of time musically and in meaning.

He's a good lyric writer but sounds in this new effort that he needs to collaborate with better musicians i.e. more melody to distinguish the chorus...

As for my nomination: Jarvis Cocker.

Loved Pulp's "Common People"

His recent song "Running the world" perfectly captured the situation at the end of the last government.

Crud music, rampant house price inflation... was there anything worthwhile that came out of the last decade?

Always good music being made, you just have to look beyond the mainstream media to find it!

In my opinion, the main genre of music that has consistently questioned and exposed social & political ills over the last few decades is hip hop.

There are hundreds of examples, but this is the first one that sprang to mind. A great albino MC called Brother Ali for your delectation:

All i can think of really.

Immortal Technique has great political lyrics. I just watched a youtube vid where he was interviewed on Russia Today - he's very articulate and keen to highlight global corruption and injustices. His music isn't to my taste personally, but the world needs more people like him to make intelligent protest music.

Whatever your political views on issues such as the recent 'wars' in Afganistan/Irag, we need more music like this:

Powerful song/video.
