Mortgage Scheme Could Provide Housebuilding Boost

THE Welsh Government is looking at a scheme to increase the availability of mortgages to help support the building industry, it has emerged.

A scheme to underwrite higher loan-to-value mortgages is one of a number of possibilities being examined by the Government in Cardiff Bay as it looks to get more homes built in Wales.

Around 14,200 new homes are needed each year to meet the nation’s housing needs. Of those more than 9,000 need to be built by private-sector developers. But in the year to March 31 housebuilders completed just 4,513 homes in Wales – around half what is needed.
