In the list of French priorities, freshly-baked baguettes are right up there with garlic, cigarettes and stinky cheese.

But French president Nicolas Sarkozy is nevertheless feeling the heat after it emerged that he has spent more than £65,000 equipping his new plane with state-of-the art airborne ovens.

They mean that the president and his superstar wife, Carla Bruni, will be able to enjoy the famous French bread as they jet around the world on the £50million Airbus A330.

.....

A further £2million was spent on bringing Mr Sarkozy’s office up to scratch.

The aircraft, which was brought from Air Caraibes, cost an astonishing £250million extra to refit, and also includes an ensuite double bedroom and Nespresso machine.

......

The A330 also comes with a missile defence system, a medical room and a conference room for 12, including a special high-standing armchair for the 5ft 5ins President.

......

The Sarkozys were forced to abandon their annual Bastille Day garden party last July, after it emerged that they were spending more than £600,000 on it - as well as up to £660 a day on flowers.

......

Public accounts also showed that the couple used taxpayers' money to settle £3,000 of fines for late payment of electricity and gas bills.

Her husband, in contrast, is a proud right winger who doubled his pay to £160,000 a year within a few weeks of taking office.

Nice, why aren't our MP's doing this. I presume they are spending taxpayers money on this and not their own, I've got no idea how wealthy he's meant to be.

".........But French president Nicolas Sarkozy is nevertheless feeling the heat after it emerged that he has spent more than £65,000 equipping his new plane with state-of-the art airborne ovens. They mean that the president and his superstar wife, Carla Bruni, will be able to enjoy the famous French bread as they jet around the world on the £50million Airbus A330. Carla Bruni and her husband, Nicolas Sarkozy, the president of France, right, have long been criticised for their luxurious lifestyle

A further £2million was spent on bringing Mr Sarkozy’s office up to scratch. The aircraft, which was brought from Air Caraibes, cost an astonishing £250million extra to refit, and also includes an ensuite double bedroom and Nespresso machine. world leaders including Prime Minister David Cameron, have been known to use budget airlines to travel, the Sarkozys insist on five star travel and accommodation wherever they go. More...the First Lady, who still uses her maiden name in her career as a pop star and who is regularly compared to Queen Marie Antoinette, even made sure that the very best music centre, including a DVD player, was fitted on the plane. But it is the cooking facilities on the presidential airline, nicknamed Air Sarko One, which is likely to cause the most anger across recession-hit France. Auditors highlighted the appearance of the two electric ovens, which are unprecedented in aviation history. Even first class cabins on commercial airlines only have a microwave oven which can reheat food, but the Sarkozys' devices will be able to make everything from ‘tete de veau’ (veal’s head) – the favourite dish of Mr Sarkozy’s predecessor, Jacques Chirac – to complicated puddings. According to the new report – which was released on the day Mr Sarkozy wrote to MPs asking them to cut costs – the ovens cost 75,234 euros, or £66,555. In a further embarrassment, researching and fitting a system of electric shutters in the Sarkozy’s cabin came to almost £1million. A further £1million was spent sealing a door leading to Mr Sarkozy’s office, and putting in extra storage space for his files. The A330 also comes with a missile defence system, a medical room and a conference room for 12, including a special high-standing armchair for the 5ft 5ins President. While Mr Sarkozy claimed that the plane was 'excellent' value for money, opposition Socialists were preparing to highlight the report by the Cour des comptes – the equivalent of the National Audit Office – as another example of his high living. The Sarkozys were forced to abandon their annual Bastille Day garden party last July, after it emerged that they were spending more than £600,000 on it - as well as up to £660 a day on flowers. At £241,000 pounds per year, the floral bill was even greater than spent by Elton John, who was revealed to spend around £460-a-day on flowers in 1997. Public accounts also showed that the couple used taxpayers' money to settle £3,000 of fines for late payment of electricity and gas bills........"

Bizarre. How does such a ridiculous little man do this? The few control the many but this is something else. The masses and their infantile need for a leader to look up to. Never understood it. Probably never will.

£65k for a couple of cookers?

Alan sugar was on the radio a while back about a £20k microwave he had fitted in his plane. The problem is they need to be approved, so the manufacturers make staggering mark-ups.
