interestrateripoff
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-14151032 More than a fifth of all households in the UK were affected by fuel poverty in 2009, the latest government figures have shown.Figures from the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) show a big jump in the number of homes burdened by high fuel bills. They went up by one million in 2009 to 5.5 million - a 22% rise. A household is described as being in fuel poverty when it has to spend more than 10% of its income keeping warm. DECC predict that the numbers for 2010 and 2011 will have risen because of continuing increases in the price of energy. "Between 2004 and 2009, energy prices increased: domestic electricity prices increased by over 75%, while gas prices increased by over 122% over the same period," DECC said. Slowly but surely the economic noose is tightening around the UK. Increasing fuel costs will start costing jobs, further increasing fuel poverty. I can see the 10% figure changing to 20%, must move the goal posts to get people out of poverty. Mystic Merv is doing his best to make the majority poorer.

Of course it will mean that many will chose to not work as now they will be better off getting the benefit and not working, and as less has been produced any poverty in the nation as a whole will have increased. But we have to do this if I am going to join the labour party or the Liberal party you see.

abaxas
Ermmm. Just dont heat the whole house all the ******ing time! To keep one room nice and warm costs <£200 a year, even on electricity! There is no such thing as 'fuel poverty', it should be renamed to 'fuel greed'.

Lots of elderly people, living alone in 3 bedroomed semis, complaining that they can only afford to heat the lounge and one of the bedrooms, being given winter fuel allowance so they can afford to heat the whole house.Meanwhile working people living in bedsits as taxes and house prices are so high that it's all they can afford. Tip: Those 2 concepts are related.
silver surfer
Finland is much colder than Britain but has no winter fuel allowance. Very few Finnish pensioners die in their homes as a result of low temperatures.
