Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said a "real solution" to the U.S. debt problem was unlikely while Obama was in office. U.S. business leaders pressed Obama and congressional leaders to act swiftly to raise the $14.3 trillion U.S. debt ceiling -- which caps how much the United States can borrow -- or risk derailing a sputtering economic recovery and endangering the global financial system. I've heard him called a Nazi, a muslim, Hawaiian, socialist, and so on. The impression I get is that he's left leaning (the health policy) and genuinely went into politics to try and "do some good". Then when he got to the Whitehouse, he realised who runs it, and progressively looked like all the motivation and the energy was progressively drained out of him when he realised he wasn't going to get anywhere with anything because he didn't have the right mates, but even if he did, he still wasn't going to get anywhere. I see the general view that makes its way here from America as "he's a socialist" (and therefore inherently evil, like Edna the evil telly or Darth Vader - a kind of all pervading evil for its own sake - this from the country which was taught to believe that all communists are somehow inherently evil too - misguided, perhaps - evil - no, not really, a weird kind of brainwashing in action there) Does any of the bile thrown at Obama have any substance? (Genuine question - not suggesting that it does or does not) Earlier in my college career, there was no doubt in my mind that as a member of the Black community I was somehow obligated to this community and would use all of my present and future resources to benefit this community first and foremost. My experiences at Princeton have made me more aware of my "Blackness" than ever before. They know they are in deep trouble, and the blame is laid at military spending and the Bush dynasty. However, when I mentioned that the government had raided the pension funds to keep the debt ball rolling, they didn't believe me. They like Obama, but know he is powerless. They haven't the foggiest what to do about it. Oh, and they are terrified of the Tea Party, I mean terrified. Obama seems to me a left leaning politician/lawyer type trying to work within the system to make changes that aren't really relavent to the issues the country faces. Like the 90's debates over taxation levels. Compare Obama's speeches to the last depression where Roosevelt gave his innaugural address in 1933. ...Primarily this is because the rulers of the exchange of mankind's goods have failed, through their own stubbornness and their own incompetence, have admitted their failure, and abdicated. Practices of the unscrupulous money changers stand indicted in the court of public opinion, rejected by the hearts and minds of men... But it may be that an unprecedented demand and need for undelayed action may call for temporary departure from that normal balance of public procedure. I am prepared under my constitutional duty to recommend the measures that a stricken nation in the midst of a stricken world may require. These measures, or such other measures as the Congress may build out of its experience and wisdom, I shall seek, within my constitutional authority, to bring to speedy adoption. But in the event that the Congress shall fail to take one of these two courses, and in the event that the national emergency is still critical, I shall not evade the clear course of duty that will then confront me. I cherish the hope that money reform will happen primarily through the education of the electorate, leading to a non-violent transition. When it is explained to them, most people are capable of understanding the absurdity of the present rent-a-currency system and a rapidly increasing number of them are now seeing that something is fundamentally wrong.
