What did Paul Weller know in 1985 about events that would happen in 2010? It's got it all, power, greed, debt, consumerism, class divide, regime change, the lot. Or is it the case that the lyrics would fit in with events at any given event in history from 1985 to the present day?

You can pretty much pick any Weller song from that era, I've got a few favourites though. (I've cut and paste, so any spelling or grammatical errors ain't mine :))

A stones throw:

I think you meant to say 20 years behind its time. That stuff was mainstream by the 1960s. Came to a crunch about 1967/68.

Friggin 'ell, rhyming rely with authority. He is Eric Cartman and I claim my $5. For some reason I've always hated Paul Weller and every band he's been in, not sure what it is about him that winds me up so much.

BTW note that intro which the oh so middle class Clash ripped off the working class Ray and Dave Davies to use at the start to London Calling.

At least Paul Weller knew what it was like to attend a secondary modern and live on a council estate for real rather than viewing it from outside as a tourist like Joe Strummer.

An excerpt from an interview Paul Weller gave to the Telegraph in 2008:

When I ask what he spends his money on he rolls his eyes. 'School fees…' He had qualms about it at first, but all his children have been educated at private schools. Where he lives is not exactly the worst part of London, he says, but the local comprehensives were never an option. 'I don't want my kids coming home speaking like Ali G - I'm just not having it.'

So much for Red Wedge, Eton Rifles and his leftie politics in the 1980s eh? I bet he's chums with Ben Elton.

No, not at all. There's very little music I don't like to listen to and the success of the artist (commercial or otherwise) isn't any kind of common factor. There's just something about Paul Weller that makes my flesh crawl.

He's just really annoying..... and then there was the time that the arrogant little shit tried to gatecrash a friend's party..... police had to be called.

Fair enough speaking from a personal experience. I have never met the bloke. I do think his music is top notch though.

It's all very well being a working class hero but I'm sure if you have kids, you put them first, if you have the money and a fee paying school is better than the local comp, you send your kids there. The problem perhaps is the education system.

As for Weller, I would love to see/hear a bit of the attitude of a band like The Jam.

that's such a good quote!!

in essence,he's saying that the socialistic system he used to aspire to has been such a disaster he doesn't want to see his kids punished by it!!

Sounds like a good plan to me. But it would have to be coupled with statism/socialism with a conscience (i.e. the state/socialism acknowledging the vital importance of capitalism) - I think that is far harder to achieve than capitalism with a conscience.

I love Paul Weller, I was an obsessive at one point. If I was to go on Mastermind he would be my specialist subject. For British social commentary most of the Jam and Style council stuff is spot on, and we could do with a 17 year old writing that kind of music today. Sure, a lot of the tunes are derivative, but Weller would be the first to admit to that, and it's not really the point.
