efdemin
I despise the Americanisation of British society and language. It's quite common on this site actually. Maybe it's because a lot of posters work in IT, where the spelling in code is generally American English? Having to write 'color' instead of 'colour' really irritates me. Not to mention the spell checker in browsers often defaults to American English as well.
Vested Disinterest
Call me a soft leftie but I hope all those miners and manufacturing workers still have hospitals to go to when they get injured at work. Likewise I hope their children get educated enough to compete in the global jobs market. But by all means get rid of the non-jobs...

athom
And Medicine 0% unemployment. Why haven't we onshored Doctors from Mumbai? If that's the route we are taking why not? We'd save a packet to boot. What's so special about doctors? you mean you haven't noticed us doing that on a huge scale already, we've been bleeding the third world dry for decades. You clearly don't live in London (90% of every medical specialism from everywhere) or have an elderly relative in a care home anywhere in the UK (Filipino carers). Honestly one day the immigrants are going to go on strike when they're fed up hearing how they're bad for us, that will put the recent non-essentials public sector workers strike in perspective. Saying that though we're probably way too generous, we pay our onshored medics the same salary as their UK colleagues when we don't really need to. I worked in a Kuwaiti hospital and found that i was paid much more than medics from other countries, Egyptian / Syrian docs etc. They offered everyone what they knew we'd get back in our home countries plus maybe 10% plus it's tax free which makes a big difference. It was up to us if we wanted to take the jobs or not, and if we wanted to argue our rights/relative worth we could feck off and do it somewhere else. Seemed perfectly reasonable to me and there was no shortage of docs applying for jobs there. We could easily do the same here and save a bundle. craggy
Whats that got to do with it? I'm saying the UK can't afford the NHS , thats not up for debate it's common knowledge surely. On the contrary the the UK can afford the NHS. The UK can't afford to continue spending huge sums on global wars, can't afford a new trident, can't afford to continue devaluing their currency, can't afford to guarantee gold-plated public-sector pensions with an ageing population, can't afford to continue borrowing more than they earn to spend on public services in general, but they certainly can afford the NHS if other things are cut. The US (which has the same kind of system you're recommending, i.e. insurance funded healthcare) spends more on *public* healthcare alone (medicaid etc) than the UK does per capita, and we have a universal healthcare, whereas in the us medicaid is only for those who can't afford their own healthcare. The US system truly is the worst of both worlds, and the NHS is a great system and cheap for what we get. http://apps.who.int/whosis/database/core/core_select_process.cfm?strISO3_select=ALL&strIndicator_select=nha&intYear_select=latest&fixed=indicator&language=english If you want private healthcare, you are welcome to pay through the nose for it here, while the rest of us use a sane system which controls costs without letting insurance companies take a huge cut and drive up prices.
