News Corp To Close News Of The World

Recommended Posts

Bit of both, yes it opens the door to a seven day Sun, but I'm just reading the internal email (I work for Newscorp), and it does urge staff to aim for highest levels of corporate behaviour.

The Guardianistas will be thrilled.

The horrid, horrid people who disagree that they know best about everything should not be allowed to buy newspapers at all.

The political influence of a newspaper should be inversely proportional to it's readership figures. Yes.

looks liek a bit of both to me.personally, couldn't give a toss about abi titmuss, but when it comes to the grieving relatives of our fallen soldiers,I was f****** shocked that I could still be shocked.

It's a 138 years old (and they weren't all bad!), the most widely read English language newspaper in the world. The expectation in the media industry was that it might be sold, but I guess that would have blocked the Sun going on Sunday.

Those kind of emails are common in investment banks too, employees even have to attend anti-money laundering and ethical-behaviour courses...

Amazing piece of business acumen...... Close a 168 year old newspaper which is mired down in quite possibly what is the biggest scandal to hit the press in all time and which was losing money anyway, with a view to resurrecting it as something else...

The Sunday Sun

Don't be fooled this move has been planned for some time, you cannot close down a newspaper like the NOTW in three days!!

Lets hope this comes back and bites Murdoch in the **** as well!!

Looks like the screws in the newsroom in Wapping are not too chuffed that many of them will be in the dole office and who were no where near the bad stuff, whilst Brooks walks straight over to the new paper...

I think I'm right, readership of News Of The World is 7.5m, number two is Times Of India at 7.3m. What specific newspaper did you have in mind with a bigger readership?

Running a seven day Sun will be more economical and profitable than running two papers...

Sunday Sun already exists in the NE they said on the radio, but some domain names have been recently registered that are sunonsunday or similar.

200 reporters, I thought it would be more, and most will stay in the organisation I expect.

All to save Rebecca Brooks. Ridiculous.

Edit: She's been escorted away by security apparently.

im talking about the free papers ie non paying, i thought that was pretty clear, the New York and UK metro, i believe the standard is also free now, NOtw may well be the biggest circulation but id like to see validated numbers rather than hearsay, as much out of personal interest more than anything

Sky News understands that Rebekah Brooks, the NOTW's former editor and current NI chief executive, was in tears when she told staff about the decision.

Sources also say there is mass anger in the newsroom - all directed at Mrs Brooks.

The paper's editor Colin Myler is said to be absolutely furious and journalists are devastated.

The closing of the NOTW comes after a host of new claims about how widespread phone hacking was.

The BBC claimed the parents of murdered Soham schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman could have been targets.

The Guardian reported murder victim Milly Dowler's phone was also accessed illegally.

Late on Thursday, Scotland Yard revealed up to 4,000 people may have been the target of phone hacking[/b[ by Glenn Mulcaire, a private investigator working for NOTW.

So that's 4000 compensation payouts at £100,000 each, that's £400,000,000. Oh dear Rupert.

BBC reported that thesunonsunday.com and .co.uk were registered two days ago by an anonymous person.

You can Google the ABC data for circulation and readership for British and US newspapers, let us know if you find anything bigger than the NOW's 7.5m readership. There might be something out there but it's always been a generally accepted rule of thumb in the UK media business that the NOW was the benchmark for eyeballs in the physical world, hence why it always occupied a special place on media schedules for detail heavy advertisers like retailers or car companies.
