classixuk
Well, why does this not surprise me? The government needs money, and fast. What better way than to review the gambling laws. Tax them on their wages then tax the casinos for taking it off them! How do we get the casino's takings to increase, thus increasing the tax revenues? Make it easier to gamble. To hell with the increase in crime that goes along with it. We'll deal with that later! To hell with the fact the land could be used to build much needed housing, schools and hospitals. They COST money. Read all about it! Maybe they're hoping one or two punters will win enough for a deposit and stop the house prices crashing? right_freds_dead
im not sure what the govt is doing with this gambling obsession. and this 24hr drink thing. this country cant deal with this kind of social pressure. its out of control in the centres most weekends as it is. seems odd. i thought they were going to put them mostly in blackpool ? but this would be a bad idea. classixuk
Didn't they originally bring in the 11 'o clock curfew for pubs because people couldn't be trusted to stop drinking at night in the London Gin Houses, thus not showing up for work in the morning? I'm an employer myself, and many a time staff used to ring up on a Saturday with hangovers unable to work after going to the pub on Friday night (intending to have just a couple of drinks). For this reason, we no longer pay staff on Fridays and delay payday until Saturday. For example, we pay on the 28th of the month, and if the 28th happens to be a Friday, you don't get paid until Saturday after work. That's the only way our younger staff are prevented from going out on a Friday night and blowing half their wages. If you ring in sick on the Saturday, you can't have your wages collected by somebody else. You have to wait until the following Monday. Funnily enough, we don't have the problem of staff calling in sick on a Saturday anymore. Edited October 1, 2005 by classixuk

In scotland it's midnight curfew.....ye lightweight monkeys In scotland it's midnight curfew.....ye lightweight monkeys To add, In Australia, there is the RSA( responsibility of serving alcohol) card which is a must for all bartenders...basically this means they have the responsibility to serve alcohol to people who are not already pissed... easy done when you are monitoring drink consumption of individuals in 1 establishment.....I know....after 4or 5 schooners( 3/4pints) in a Sydney 24hour pub i was told to leave. But what about the pub crawl and peeps buying rounds?????
SarahBell
They were going to have a number of casinos but there was enough opposition to make them change it to just one supercasino. They reckoned it'll go to blackpool, the place already being thevegas of the north. I don't see casinos as any worse than the national lottery (which is horrifically unregulated in the way there are no restrictions on who can play and where... unlike bingo and casinos which require 24 hr pre-registration.) We have to do something to boost tourism and this is one way which might bring in people from outside the UK to spend money. Its not like we have any manufacturing jobs left so tourism often has to fill the gap.
