Thorntons To Close Up To 180 Shops

Recommended Posts

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-13939089

Thorntons is to close up to 180 stores over the next three years following a strategic review of its business.

The chocolate maker, which gave a profit warning in May, said "a minimum" of 120 shops would shut, with the possibility of an extra 60 closures.

It's the sweetless recovery.

Doomed to failure, you either buy chocolate bars or high quality chocolates. Not chocolate bars shaped into chocolate boxes.

I have to say its great to see branding fail when the goods simply are not what's on the tin.

Stuck between a rock and a hard place , eroding margins due to soaring price of cocoa and other commodities whilst faced with a clientele looking to cut back discretionary spending.

have to agree, never shop there.generally seems to be old biddies like me ma.local supermarket had big tins of quality street for £4 at Christmas.Ol pedro being the frugal one he is,is now equppied with enough gifts for the year.

what would you rahter have.kilo of quality street or a small bag of toffee, that to be fair, you could probably make yourself?I msut be missing something.

And it's not even that nice. Hotel chocolate is better.

Isn't that the rub...

When Thorntons first arrived they were the specialist chocolate shop but now supermarkets have had their bottom end - Tesco's finest etc. and people like Hotel Chocolate or other smaller speciality shops have had the top end.

I can't remember the last time I bought anything in a Thorntons shop - though I think I bought one of their boxes from a supermarket a few years back.

The question is how many will hotel chocolat close?

If people are spending less I'd have thought they'd have been much harder hit. They are much dearer!

I think it's the mid-market which is getting hit the hardest. People either want quality or dirt-cheap so this will benefit whoever is seen as the top of the range in a given market.

I'm quite happy that my taste buds are common as muck.

I'll buy hotel chocolat stuff now and then, especially for christmas gifts, but i'm just as happy with a bar of galaxy/cadburys.

That'll be the Credit Crunchies.

On BBC Dog's Dinner Breakfast this morning, Sian Williams expressed shock and disbelief that four High Street names had gotten into trouble in the past seven days. That was before this announcement was made . . . . . <_<

PS It's all started kicking off in Grease Greece, anarchists dressed in black attacking the finance ministry. Where is injin today?
