The National Audit Office has warned that unless the Department for Work and Pensions makes "rapid progress" in reorganising the way it runs it will fail to meet its cost-cutting targets by 2014-15.

Whitehall's biggest department has been told it must come up with a more "robust" plan for how to shave £19.63bn from its benefits, pensions and running costs within the next four years or miss crucial targets set out in the Spending Review.

Officials said the DWP "did not yet have a detailed model" of how it should operate in the future and was "not in the position to make rational choices" about which areas of work to stop, change or continue.

The warning came in the first of a series of NAO reports looking at central departments' progress on cost-cutting.

No doubt to many on here these findings will be a huge shock. So tax revenue projections are unlikely to happen, now the efficiency savings are unlikely to happen either.

Still the printer office isn't far away.
