Only Fools And Houses

Del and Rodders became millionaires after exercising the right to buy and flogging their crap flat to a Square Mile BTLer.

So Britain fell about the place laughing at a show that wasn't really a comedy. Confirmed by the fact that the idiot brothers stuck the proceeds in barbarous gold and lost ...

Hang on - life can't be that unfair. Surely the brothers rewarded the bankers by spunking the money on time-shares in Ibiza.

It was a long running comedy. I have tried as best as I can to explain the story behind why the characters were still in council accomodation. In my book the reasons behind his entitlement were understandable.

For the record, I don`t think Council housing should be automatically handed down to family members. As for him being a fence  .. It was why this was such a hit over the years. He was a lovable rogue. He was not violent and just wanted to better his life and that of his family.

Maybe this thread is turing North v South on comedy sitcoms

In reality and IMO. I would rather see council housing given to a brother who from a young age has been responsible as a parent to his younger brother and elderly Grandad and later Uncle who as it happens both fought for this country `During the War`... than a family of Somalians who do not speak any English, do not work and do not contribute to society.

I think council housing should be provided on a contract and reviewed on a regular basis. Get back on your feet and get back in the rat race.

Well, I was going to ask how you'd view the situation if it were an immigrant family but, blow me, you managed to do that all by your self. Looks like I gave you juuuust enough rope.

I'd prefer a family of Somalis (and bear in mind I've lived in Sheffield) than some "loveable rogue" who sells stolen goods (clearly, as you say, successfully appealing to those who would buy a car stereo with wires dangling then complain about useless coppers and car crime) and has an insurance defrauding Uncle whose war record was greatly exaggerated. I'd have thought with your knowledge of the sitcom you'd have remembered all of that.

It's a shame that the UK has regressed to the point where access to land (which nobody created) is such a big problem for ordinary people again.

That's what happens when you elect socialist governments.

Remember, the Town and County Planning Act was passed by Labour, precisely because they wanted to force the 'ordinary people' into Stalinist tower blocks. Sure, the Tories supported it, but they'd never have been able to get it passed against Labour opposition: 'the evil Tories want to prevent ordinary people from building new houses that would spoil the view in their villages!'

At least I am being clear. You seem to have an issue with a popular sitcom character because he was a dodgy market trader :D

What is the cause of your anger? Reading back over the posts you just come across as a grumpy git. Try debating the whole point instead of picking out snippets and going all Victor Meldrew on me.

Well done for living in Sheffield. I spent the first 27 years of my life growing up in Inner London... Is this now a game of Top Trumps?

and yes I`d rather have the Trotters next door to me than a huge family of Somalis. These Somalis who are not working and on benefits we will have to presume will be law abiding  .

I may just benefit from my neighbours and can at least communicate with them.

Lovely Jubbly.

I was under the impression that almost all on this site were against paying full rigged market prices for housing, surely that's why this site exists?

You are in support of paying rigged market rents so you must be an estate agent or btl'er? Which is it?

For your information I try to pay less than rigged market prices for most things including food which I either grow myself or buy cheaply from my employer.

The fact that 'most people' are getting ripped off means that I must allow myself to get ripped off too does it?

If everyone had an equal opportunity to get a half price council house it would be fair.

You clearly claimed you were not getting any benefits of the government. You clearly are.

You would rather others do worse than you than doing better yourself.

If there was sufficient at cost housing we would all do better.

Try not to be so bitter over someone having a council house ffs! It's pathetic.

Then why not try to make it so.

Lets all shoot ourselves in the foot by letting BTL run riot just in case someone else gets something that we don't.

Do you see how easy it is to divide and rule this nation. For fecks sake grow up!

Perhaps if we had invested enough in social housing over the years, we wouldn't be such slaves to the stupid housing bubble.

Well yes.

I really do despair at the fact that so many on this site accept private rents are what 'most people have to pay' and are therefore 'right'. Anyone paying less than bubble prices it 'getting benefits'!

What we really need to look at is rents versus wages. Throughout the fifties and sixties council rents were about 25% of average tenants wages, even now rents are at 33% of NMW or probably a bit over. The problem is that the government are trying to double council rents (currently rising a 7% for 10 years would do it) which would mean me paying around 60 percent of a barely rising income. In that case I really would need benefits!

Meanwhile someone is paying 'the right price' (60%) and blaming council dwellers!

Btw, does anyone know if the French still have laws preventing people getting a mortgage that requires more than 30% of their post tax income to pay it off?

Flicking through the channels looking for something to watch tonight and found an old episode of Only fools and horses showing on Gold. Still makes me laugh and a true gem of British comedy.

This was the episode where the lifts broke down in Nelson Mandella towers and Del and Grandad try and pull a scam with the council to get a move to a new build 3 bed bungalow with garage and garden.

Keep in mind this was 1983 and the episode was called homesick. Del made a speech to the effect of. People like us have no chance of getting a cushty place like that because we don't speak with a foreign accent and have nine kids.

about 4.30 in.....

Even though a comedy this was watched by over 9 million people and just goes to show the perception of council house allocation has changed little in almost 30 years.

Doubt if the Beeb would allow such material today

It was taking the mick out of the likes of Southwark Council who were at the vanguard of multiculturalism at the time. The policy in Southwark was to push out the indigenous white working/non working class with which ever "ethnics" were in vogue in any particular week. They were only pursuing such polices for their own extreme political agenda with no genuine concern for the immigrants.

The Trotter's did not invest in gold, if they had they would not been penniless. They put and lost their new found wealth in Argentina and were ruined by Argentina's hyper inflation collapse. :P

Top Trumps, eh? Well, you certainly win on pointless use of emoticons. Sheffield has a relevance in this discussion from a Somali PoV: worked with a few in a mechanics and, blow me, their English was fine would you believe. You can take place of abode as a competition rather than as part of an attempt to ground a discussion in reality rather than perceived reality, but that reveals rather more about you than it does about me.

This discussion was never about problems with dodgy barrow boys, more about the odd double standards of many on this board which inevitable went from implied to explicit: English scroungers good, foreign scroungers bad. After six years of this, it's hardly a surprise I'm not [email protected] rainbows at it reappearing for the umpteenth time. It seems that the depth of this discussion has passed you by which may be why the thread seems to be snippets.

Edit - typo
