Hackers 'steal entire 2011 census'

The entire 2011 UK census database has been stolen by hackers and will be published online, it has been claimed.

Ryan Cleary, an alleged member of the hacking group behind the claim, LulzSec, was arrested in Essex this morning by specialist cyber crime officers from Scotland Yard.

The 19-year-old was taken to a central London police station and remains in custody on suspicion of Computer Misuse Act and Fraud Act offences.

A “significant amount of material” was also seized from an address in Wickford, Essex.

The “pre-planned intelligence-led operation” in collaboration with the FBI followed claims online that the 2011 census database had been stolen and would be published in full.

“We have blissfully obtained records of every single citizen who gave their records to the security-illiterate UK government for the 2011 census,” a posting purportedly by LulzSec said.

So can we now look forward to this information being leaked on-line?

FFS I don't know why I am still surprised by the level of State incompetence.

Its the Office of National Statistics who run the census, and are supposedly independent of the govt... Must have been an inside job...would they have put the census info on to a server(s) that are connected to the net?

Captia were involved, so I'm not surprised..

Well if they were to fine you now for not filling in the census just take them to court and bring up how easy these guys were able to hack into the data.Privacy issues therein should get you out of paying any fine.

You aren't going to get taken to court for not filling in your census, at the last census 1.5 million didn't fill it in, 30 were fined, ha, ha.

But wouldn't your court costs be more than just paying the fine? Who said you had to fill it out with 100% accurate information anyway, I'm sure the thousands of Jedi's might agree?

Does this mean we can all sue the company involved for a breach of data protection?

If this is true then there is going to be a lot of fraud over the coming years.

Everyone is going to have to move house now so we can all start again with new addresses. I think it's definitely an inside job.

Yes, because you could fill in the census form on-line.

There's no real info to care about, but shocking display of incompetence once again.

I am actually shocked this time. Presuming this was stolen over the internet, you'd hope there'd be a massive fine to be paid by whoever was meant to be protecting it.

Not my part of IT, but I'm of the impression this stuff really isn't that hard.

taking the fine would probably be safer than filling that crap in.

What fine?

I saw red when I read the fine threat and decided I definitely wasn't going to do it.

F4CK 'EM, WHO ARE THEY TO DEMAND MY PERSONAL INFORMATION, I AM A FREE MAN.

What happened?

A little old lady came knocking a week later to say they hadn't recieved my census form:

- "That's strange, I definitely posted it love".

- "Oh, ok, I'll tick you off the list then".

Since then, nothing. Job done. Incompetent Tw@ts.

Even if it were true; as the man in the article says, they take security very seriously.

Ergo the data is encrypted to the highest standard and so of no use to any hacker. I'd also like the technical details of this "hack", as we're not stupid. Was the data being properly looked after to begin with? At least it's not a laptop found on a train again with a file on the desktop titled "UK census data 2011 - full.mdb" or somesuch. That would be bad wouldn't it. I think if that were to happen again you'd probably want to cover it up with some autistic kid-genius hacker story wouldn't you.
