Ryan Cleary, an alleged member of the hacking group behind the claim, LulzSec, was arrested in Essex this morning by specialist cyber crime officers from Scotland Yard. The 19-year-old was taken to a central London police station and remains in custody on suspicion of Computer Misuse Act and Fraud Act offences. A “significant amount of material” was also seized from an address in Wickford, Essex. The “pre-planned intelligence-led operation” in collaboration with the FBI followed claims online that the 2011 census database had been stolen and would be published in full. “We have blissfully obtained records of every single citizen who gave their records to the security-illiterate UK government for the 2011 census,” a posting purportedly by LulzSec said. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/news/8589078/Hackers-steal-entire-2011-census.html So can we now look forward to this information being leaked on-line? Must have been an inside job...would they have put the census info on to a server(s) that are connected to the net? Captia were involved, so I'm not surprised.. You aren't going to get taken to court for not filling in your census, at the last census 1.5 million didn't fill it in, 30 were fined, ha, ha. If this is true then there is going to be a lot of fraud over the coming years. Everyone is going to have to move house now so we can all start again with new addresses. Presuming this was stolen over the internet, you'd hope there'd be a massive fine to be paid by whoever was meant to be protecting it. Ergo the data is encrypted to the highest standard and so of no use to any hacker. I'd also like the technical details of this "hack", as we're not stupid. Was the data being properly looked after to begin with? At least it's not a laptop found on a train again with a file on the desktop titled "UK census data 2011 - full.mdb" or somesuch. That would be bad wouldn't it. I think if that were to happen again you'd probably want to cover it up with some autistic kid-genius hacker story wouldn't you.
