Hackers 'steal Entire 2011 Census'

Recommended Posts

The entire 2011 UK census database has been stolen by hackers and will be published online, it has been claimed

Ryan Cleary, an alleged member of the hacking group behind the claim, LulzSec, was arrested in Essex this morning by specialist cyber crime officers from Scotland Yard.

Linky

Wonder if there is any truth to this claim? Im sure we'll find out soon enough if the data pops up online.

Question is - did they cut and paste or copy and paste.

One hopes that the census was on some kind of fault tolerant RDMS but knowing the UK we probably have spent tens of millions on a big excel spreadsheet.

I dunno but the article states that it was Lockheed Martin who collected the data so they certainly would have got a good payday out of the census. I thought they made planes.

Cost you £1000 fine though.

Didn't it?

I dont think my uncle has ever filled one in or ever been fined. And he's near 70.

Usual excuses are 'dog ate it' or 'My house burnt down with the census form in it'

Never gave him any bother.

If you answer the door, and you say that "you've lost it", then you would have been issued another form...If the census collector has tried 2,3,4 times, and still no answer, then they will have filled out a dummy form, which has basic information on it, such as type of dwelling, is it self-contained, number of people that may live there, etc...

Its the ones who tell the collector to eff off, will be the ones chased up by the census (by sending round the heavies / non-compliance teams)...only 38 people were prosecuted at the last census...once they get a solicitors letter through the door, most people buckle...

I settled for filling it in as unreadable as I could make it whilst still looking like a valid attempt at filling it in (so the odds of it appearing with my name spelled right and therefore being simple to link to me are fairly small - I've a reasonable unusual name). Half expected to get whinged at about that but never was.

Forms would have been bounced, if someone wrote in "Mickey Mouse", or if they were scribbled over, however, I doubt they would have been if someone was a bit more clever about it...
