The Guardian is in financial difficulty:

Riches to rags as Guardian bleeds £33m in a year

The Guardian, propped up by a car magazine, faces going out of print after warning of a cash crisis and the threat of more redundancies.

...

"The problem they've got is that they're never going to get back the revenue they've lost from public sector advertising, circulation is on a long downward slope and they are giving away their digital content.

Good riddance. It read like a university student newspaper.

15 years ago it was a sharp read, but like all (as far as i can tell) lefties it has run out of good arguments to justify the current state of affairs

free money is such a dangerous thing

+1. 20 years ago I used to get a weekly compilation of Guardian articles - they were good. 10 years ago, I can remember picking it up and I couldn't believe that people paid money for this %^&*. It really did read like a leftie student rag. Totally out of touch with reality.

The positive is that the vast amount of public sector job advertising that used to fund this has actually stopped. Well hooray, one real cut has taken place.

The other positive is that this out-of-date socialist utopian propaganda sheet is going out of business.

Stopped reading it after Peter Preston grassed up Sarah Tisdall rather than going to jail himself. BTW I doubt it will be allowed to go bust as it is much an agent for social control as any Tory rag. In fact all the news print media is struggling not just the Grauniad.

Yet more evidence for the fact that no-one actually volunteers to be subjected to sanctimonious leftie hand-wringing. Preach to the choir all you want, you won't build a congregation.

Once the Grau folds, the BBC will be the only bastion of ever-bigger-statism left. Time for a subscription model, I think.

My favourite article in the Guardian recently was one where they were slagging off the evil Tories for trying to stop people donating over £50k to a political party. The comments were hilarious.

This is after years of going on about how the millionaire Ashcroft was buying too much influence in government.

Interesting point here:

Yet The Guardian has remained guilty of a certain degree of extravagance in the eyes of some commentators. Even after shedding more than 300 employees, GNM still employs 1,500 staff, including 630 journalists. By way of comparison The Independent, which has a circulation of 179,371, a third less than The Guardian, employs just 170 journalists to produce its daily and Sunday papers and its website, not much more than a quarter of GNM's staffing levels.

Mr Rusbridger and the previous chief executive Carolyn McCall were also criticised for spending £100m on new presses which made no difference to circulation, and for moving to a swish new office in King's Cross, while Ms McCall raised eyebrows by taking a £143,000 bonus shortly before leaving last year, despite having seen profits tumble.

The standard bearer for a bloated and inefficient public sector is itself bloated and inefficient.

Or it could just be that you were 10 years wiser.

Doesn't surprise me, they've been phoning and mailing me for the past 2 months offering stupid deals on advertising.

Explains why they have been spamming me more lately.....

Hi again,

This probably seems a little persistent of me, but I sent you an email yesterday regarding a late ad offer in The Observer Magazine (copy below). If you haven't had the time to consider it then let me give you a further incentive. If you take me up on this offer for a single panel ad for £286, you can also appear in the 25th June issue of The Guardian Weekend Magazine for an extra £195 (Usually £385 on its own!)

That gives you a mini-campaign of two ads for a total price of £481.

Would you like to give this a go?

Best regards,

Rachael

At least they cover Bilderberg , even if it's only on an online blog and not in the actual physical paper.

Still , wouldn't bother me either way if all the newspapers went under , alternative news via the internet is the future , mainstream media is scared shitless of it hence why they want to further control the internet and close down "terrorist" websites that do not spew the official line on everything.

Genius business model.

Govt austerity is going to wreak havoc in the private sector, too many companies have been leeching off taxpayer cash. Although getting rid of the number 1 parasite is going to be a bit more difficult, ie the bankers.

I remember being forced, despite my loud protests to advertise a couple of EHO jobs in the Guardian. It cost £10K and was a complete waste of money because any suitable candidates would be reading the professional journal (the jobs page online anyone can see) which we put an advert in for £1500.

Along with prime advertising and being forced to use parasite recruiters like Commensura the tw@ts in HR doubled the cost of recruitment.

Lots of in-depth articles about nothing.

I had to ask myself could I really consider myself left wing or not when I find the left wing broadsheet vacuous.

A perfect description of both the paper and my own position. You are not alone.

The thing about the Guardian is that the amount of nepotism involved when you look closely is unreal. It's almost as if its passed down through the generations. Michael White and Polly Toynbee must be on £500K a year each. You couldn't make it up as the title of the this thread said! That's socialism for you folks.

Heat magazine has a circulation of 500k +

On this metric we should be looking more to their editorial stance when considering government economic policy.

I would be highly unsurprised if a last minute bail out came from a taxpayer underwritten bank, probably RBS.
