Proxy Servers And The Like

Recommended Posts

I am moving abroad and have been looking into various proxies so I can access British websites like I am still in the UK. I am willing to pay for a stable service so I can watch streaming video. Does anyone have any recommendations/advice?

Cyberghost Vpn is pretty good for video, you can also pick machines in a variety of countries, it abou £10 per month for 50GB.

it does only run on Windows though and not Linux.

I have got a second account with VPN worldwide which rebadges finevpn out of the US, this will work with Linux, Mac and Windows standard VPN.

I mainly use these for access services that restrict content between regions, basically a good way of getting film releases ahead of the UK.

How very dare you - their use where I am is illegal!

I pay about £15 a quarter for some non descript service. Got it from a colleague. Not much good for TV but fine for porn and lottery, beer and wine websites - that sort of stuff

Is that the one the Govt set up to catch all the porn freaks - proxy honeypot?

Not sure about streaming video but I used Viscosity for everything I needed for one year. Haven't renewed since it run out last month simply because I haven't been on/needed any dodgy websites...... Bar this one of course :)

One obvious bit of advice is load all you need before flying out. It could well be blocked this end. Example skype in many places. Good luck!

If you want to use bbc-iplayer for free whilst abroad or anyother countries equivalent (US, Germany etc) then download TOR (just google it) then download Mgeni. Restart the computer and TOR will automatically preload, then click on Mgeni link to install. Once in you can choose which country your IP address originates from by choosing from the countries list, then you can watch any geo-specific programme for that territory.

Also it is very easily to disable TOR when you don't need it since the programme can slow the operating speed a bit. I constantly use this service to watch iplayer abroad with work and also HBO, CBS, ABC premiere season in States from September that's always ahead of the UK.

Like hardcore YouTube videos of women driving cars (and crashing, obviously).

I'll check that method out.

Thanks very much everyone for all your suggestions. Any other advice gratefully received :)

I use StrongVPN to get at US and UK TV, seems to work well enough:
