General Congreve

Outrageous Use Of Taxpayers Money

Recommended Posts

An article in my local rag prompted me to do some further investigation recently, here is the resultant letter to the paper prompted by my findings (I've taken out a few specifics on HPC for anonymity):

Dear Gazzette,

In the May 13th edition of the Gazzette you carried an article '************', it detailed how the 'not-for-profit' group ************* had acquired funding to help shop fronts in ******** get a makeover, including banks.

Having contacted *********** I have discovered that the £200,000 funding was 100% publicly funded, a small part coming from ******* Town Council, just under 50% from District Council and the rest from the publicly-funded body of the South East England Development Association (SEEDA).

Much as I love this town, I am outraged that hard-pressed taxpayers money, much of it from local taxpayers, is being used to fund private businesses, let alone the banks (haven't they had enough taxpayers money already?). All this while vital public services suffer cuts! It is nothing more than theft from the taxpayer to subsidise private business, it is beyond a joke.

Yours indignantly,

General Congreve

Having posted the letter on facebook I have since discovered that exactly the same thing has happened in a friend's town in Somerset, the result being each shop there now has a little flag outside with a logo that represents what they sell. I'm sure that'll bring the customers back in droves.

We might as well be a socialist state at this rate.

I think we can all see from this small example of tax waste and misuse, why this country has a date with bankruptcy or effective bankruptcy through the printing press.

I figured I'd start off with something the local populace could get a handle on, then build up the case for gold across a number of letters/weeks. ;)

I think on this board, we have all become immune or de-sensitised to the widespread looting and theft.

Sorry GC, Britain's Got (no) Talent is on all this week so I'm more interested in juggling acts and people who cannot sing ;)

As a matter of interest, what are the parking arrangements like near your retail center? How aggressive and punitive are the consequences of miscomplying?

I would have been a few years ago but I am all incensed out now. I can even read the daily wail from cover to cover without feeling the slightest hint of emotion now :)

It is free parking for an hour or two in the town centre, but stay over for more than a second and you will be got by Peggy. Peggy is our dictator-like traffic warden who has ruled supreme for decades. Gave me my first ticket for a minor offence in 1993 and gave me my last one for parking outside my own home a couple of years back, totally ruthless, no compassion, cannot be reasoned with. <_<

Well to be fair if I put my gold hat on I feel exactly the same, just one more straw on the economy's back helping us along on our way to bankruptcy, sterling destruction, and free money for me! :D

But still some slightly less roguish part of me is up in arms at hearing banks are in line to get free taxpayer money to do a spot of redecorating to make themselves look 'pretty'.

Obviously shouldn't happen but this seems like far from the most egregious example of misuse of public funds - look at those councillors on Tyneside who've spunked a load on US lawyer's fees.

I've instructed my girlfriend to shoot me in the head if she ever catches me writing a letter to the local newspaper.

It's owner definitely needed it - we're talking about the singing duet one right?
