interestrateripoff
http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/local/an_extra_7m_in_council_cuts_1_3394369 A FURTHER £7 million of cuts may have to be made to council services this year, the authority’s new Labour administration claims. They also revealed next year’s cuts may have to be increased by £8m from £48m to £56m - unless they increase council tax by up to four per cent. Labour councillors say they cannot rule out a council tax rise, or changing bin collections from weekly to fortnightly, which would save £2.4m. Labour say the extra £7m of possible cuts for this year is a shortfall in planned savings created by problems negotiating with contractors providing council services. ...... Officials warn 44 of 300 money-saving projects have a ‘less than 75 per cent chance’ of being achieved. ........... Last year, the council was £8 million over-budget in the summer but managed to end the financial year with a £10.5 million underspend. Labour is pressing ahead with £2.5 million of extra spending on projects such as creating apprenticeships, restoring funding for 10 Police Community Support Officers and reversing cuts to the budgets of Sure Start children’s centres and Museums Sheffield trust. Now is it me or is there a more obvious answer on how to save £2.5m??? Answers on a postcard please.... Labour are clearly streets ahead at spending other peoples money. SHERWICK
Executives, managers, coordinators, pencil pushers have a 5% pay cut - job done. Ah yes, that was it. Well done. It's just so difficult to come up with such a 'blue sky out of the box' solution though!
Xurbia
http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/local/an_extra_7m_in_council_cuts_1_3394369 Now is it me or is there a more obvious answer on how to save £2.5m??? Anyone at the council who speaks with a nasal monotone voice gets the sack. That will deal with 99% of them. Bin collection in the UK is treated like some expensive Mensa challenge. Bin collectors get paid very well to do something that's very basic. There must be a way to reduce costs with so many unemployed people laying around. Council officials love all their little power games with homeowners. I cannot think of too many organisations that actually fine you for trivial mistakes, like putting the wrong amount of rubbish in your bin. They could also reduce staff holidays and get real about pension contributions. Efficiency is something the private sector understands. SarahBell
They must be doing something wrong. Our local labour council claims to be reopening the shut respite care home (Was never at more than 50% capacity so one has to wonder if all respite is underused and massive savings could be made without harming a soul)
tahoma
Washington Monument Syndrome. These people, paid with money extorted from you, think they can now blackmail you. Bin collections are a common means to do this as they are one of the few council services people would willingly pay for given a choice. "Give us more money or we will stop translating leaflets into Urdu" does not have quite the same leverage as the prospect of rat-infested bin areas. The government needs a strike team to go into councils that try this on, summarily firing the highest paid person should be their first action on day one. When Paul Blomfield was on radio sheffield last week he was saying that all the extra spending was based on a balanced budget. Of course, Toby Foster (as much as i like him as a presenter), failed to press him on this. there was definitely no mention of 7 million quids worth of shortfall
aa3
Bin collection is about the only useful thing they do(so its the one thing they threaten to cut - its their only card), and if I remember Tahomao was saying the cost of that is less than 2% of their budget. A nation with falling industrial output.. just can't afford so many climate change scientists, change agents, diversity co-ordinators, Assistant Accessibility and Inclusion Development Manager, TRANSPORT FOR LONDON Busness Process Re-engineering Project Manager, LONDON BOROUGH OF BARKING AND DAGENHAM CCTV Operator, ENFORCEMENT JOBS Climate Change Manager, BRAINTREE DISTRICT COUNCIL Community Safety Partnership and Engagement Adviser, IMPROVEMENT & DEVELOPMENT AGENCY Deputy Senior Playworker, LONDON BOROUGH OF ENFIELD | Information Governance Team Manager, LEICESTER CITY COUNCIL Rural Renaissance Consultant, Lincolnshire Theatres Operations Co-ordinator, CHELMSFORD BOROUGH COUNCIL A taste of some important jobs that are last in line for cuts.
