"I bought my current house 10 years ago for £119,000" ... "put my house on the market for £485,000" Apparently the poor baby can't sell it at that price. Unable to make an entire lifetime's salary by doing absolutely nothing. Boo hoo. I know they only put these articles to wind us up, but this one worked on me. I checked nethouseprices recently for a road near me, a typical London road of Victorian houses, most of them split into flats. Check out some of the bought and sold figures from the last 5 years, some making £100,000s in a few months. You couldn't make it up could you? However I do think there's some sort of poetic justice going on here:- most decent hardworking English families struggling to bring up children deserted such areas long ago; its only the trendy overpaid meejah fools who think that living in such a "culturally diverse" area in some way adds to their quality of life, when the reality is obviously quite the opposite. You can expect some prices to rise greater than the average if these area's are cleaned up. Parts of Hackney have great houses, another example would be Highfields in Leicester crime city but some of the houses 'could' be lovely. Was the journo so stupid to think that repeating that none of her friends had sold in a year was damaging in such a popular paper? Or was she just being honest? I understand you points Dr. Bubb, but I am still a little sceptical. On 3.5 times mortgage multiple, you would need to earn around 5 times the national wage to live in Hackney? Have I missed something? Maybe I am being a little old fashioned to think that there is one major earner in a house, but if not then we face childless amergeddon in the future. If the 125k a year earners are living in Hackney, who the hell lives in Knightsbridge? There are only so many Russian billionaires to go round! This bubble has shifted all thinking! I've said this many times - we are going to face extremely low birth rates in the future. Young educated people today will have very little hope of ever owning family sized property (i.e. at least 3 beds) in many parts of the country unless there is a big correction in house prices. In a paper article the other day a couple earning £100K were quoted as saying they struggled to bring up 3 kids in the SE. The only ones having children will be those that make their income and get their housing free from it. Everyone loses, the chav society will take over completely.... Another feature of Hackney's gun culture is the random nature of shootings. Once, unless people were armed robbers or security guards, they were unlikely ever to find themselves face-to-face with a gun, but in my constituency there have been drive-by shootings in which people were killed while waiting at a bus stop. At a party, people have been killed by a bullet from a gun fired in another room that passed through the wall. In the past two weeks, people were shot up in a Turkish restaurant in Dalston by people travelling past on a motorbike. Imagine the terror experienced by people in a restaurant, at a bus stop or walking up the street when they see two guys go past on a motorbike spraying bullets. The random nature of gun crime in the city and its international nature give Hackney's gun culture a specific character. Disputes about drugs and payment may originate in Mountain View, Kingston in Jamaica but they are resolved on the streets of Dalston in Hackney. Just as business and labour have gone global, so has crime. Hackney is involved in the traffic of criminals between New York, London, Jamaica and elsewhere. There is therefore a distinct and unnerving phenomenon in an area where high-value housing lies cheek by jowl with what is commonly known as murder mile. For many years, I have urged Ministers to take tough action on imitation firearms. In Hackney, such firearms are not ornaments like vases or a piece of china. They are one step away from real firearms. The majority of what are misleadingly described as Yardie-type shootings in London—most of those involved do not come from Jamaica or have not travelled there—are perpetrated with activated imitation firearms. That is why I take a tougher line than colleagues who regard such guns merely as ornaments. The problem is not just a media scare. The publication of annual crime figures show that gun crime has risen by 10 per cent. and the use of imitation weapons by 66 per cent. Last Monday, a 22-year-old was shot in Dalston, and he is still in hospital. In the past 10 days, a 20-year-old who was trying to stop a friend being beaten up was shot in the face. As I said, bullets were sprayed into a Turkish restaurant by a gunman on a motorcycle in Dalston. Gun crime is a tragedy not just for the people who are shot but for their family and the community. What can it be like to be a mother who says goodbye to her son in the morning or the afternoon only to receive a call from the police saying he has been shot and may be dying?
