Take Amber, aged 13. She swaggers about the school as though she runs the place, which she pretty much does. Amber has an SEN (a special educational need). What this need is, apart from simply dreadful behaviour that is never challenged, isn’t clear.

However, with her SEN, she is given carte blanche to do whatever she wants.

When she saunters in to class late it doesn’t matter because the work she’s missed has been done for her by her teaching assistant, Mrs Kelly — whose task it is to assist Amber.

Mrs Kelly scurries from class to class, carrying Amber’s bag, so she doesn’t ‘lose’ it. She produces a pen for Amber because she, of course, won’t have one, and more often than not, it is Mrs Kelly who, under the guise of ‘helping’ Amber, does the work for her.

If she doesn’t, then Amber will throw things around the room, loudly text or chat on her mobile and try to fight her classmates. ‘You w*****,’ is her favourite expression for any child attempting the work I’ve set.

I did once manage to meet Amber’s mother. She looked bored during our conversation about her daughter’s behaviour: ‘She’s SEN so she can’t concentrate,’ Amber’s mum explained, before demanding angrily: ‘Why did you confiscate her mobile? That’s like stealing.’

Yes it's the Wail so no idea how accurate this is, but the article is at least worth an amusing read.

I quite like the idea of assistants doing the work, clearly this person is being prepped for being a top CEO or a City worker.

I wonder if the assistant will end up sitting the exams for this individual.

Surely to get a SEN you must have at least some sort of medically defined problem?

For the really disruptive ones like this, the best thing for everyone would be to pack them off to a boarding school of some kind, and do it early. Just getting them into a regular pattern of eating and sleeping can help a lot; you'll usually have a chaotic home life behind all this.

Might sound expensive, but obviously the parents would contribute any tax credits and child benefit, and you'd end up saving on a lifetime of dependency. And I'm saying this as a Guardian reader..

There are mixed ability classes that work in the Far East. Why? Because thick kids want to learn, parents support the teachers and don't put up with any shit and kids know if they don't perform at school in the short term they get a kicking from Dad and in the long term they could end up under a bridge. The down side is kids who have genuine problems are overlooked or not helped. I had one kid I am pretty sure had ADHD and he was just continually bollocked morning, noon and night by everyone. I am convinced he couldn't help it - there's no upside to dicking about in the Far East. Used to turn up with bruises regularly. I think there is too much stick out there, but here we have far too much carrot.

This is the first time I believe what I read in a Daily Mail story.

I spent a few years working in primary and secondary schools in Kent as support staff, and honestly I can say that I can relate to everything said in that story.

Appalling antisocial behaviour, no respect, insults, F-word in every other sentence, obscene gestures, constant shouting, fights, truanting, littering, watching pr0n during IT classes, xenophobia, graffiti or other degradation, threats, "soft" drugs, kids walking out of lessons, ... Check

ADHD as a one-size-fits-all excuse... Check

Violent chav parents opposing the mean teachers who have no right to force their little angels to do this and that. Check

Graduate teachers crying when they realise it's not the dream job they were expecting... Check

I remember one colleague who summed up the situation quite well: "We have duties, they have rights."

On school PC's? Had the little dears figure out how to get around the firewall? Or where they just using there own phones, or flash drives?

Perhaps using pr0n in the lesson might have get them more interested in doing some work. If the male performers pencil increases in length by 45% when erect and is currently 5" flaccid, how big will it be when erect? On a 40" TV how much bigger will it look than reality and how will it make you feel compared to your own inadequate one?

Whilst in top sets for most subjects I was in a mixed ability class for English which meant that half the class were average but willing to work and the other half were wasters. Despite this I managed to get a B in GCSE language and C in literature. However I wonder how many others got dragged down by being mixed with the trash?

No, he was questioned later and admitted to doing it.

He was made to write an apology letter in which he explained that he couldn't control himself and felt possessed by some kind of "demon".

Another story:

A colleague in primary school did get false allegations made towards her.

A pupil accused her of watching pornography during class, and looking at websites that had swear words in them.

She was suspended for 3 weeks. An investigation was conducted, nothing incriminating was found.

Pro tip for unscrupulous parents / pupils:

If you don't like Mr/Mrs XYZ at school, contact the Headteacher and tell XYZ was watching pr0n during class.

There's no guarantee XYZ will be sacked, but at least you know you'll be harming them psychologically.

yep...half the lesson was wasted trying to control the other half of the class.....sometimes all you got was a book to read to teach you....could have done that at home.

No-one forces you to work at a badly run school with horrid kids and take part in this insane mess, but it's because you do that it's possible to perpetuate the mayhem.

Just because it's kids who mete out the abuse doesn't make it any better -- no-one would put up with a fraction of that vile

behaviour in an office, and even in the private home, this would be viewed as a serious case of domestic violence.

Maybe it's time to ask why schools should be different here, and not meaning to be rude, but psychotic environments easily shift the perception of what is normal and cause people to behave irrationally, and I always find it amazing how many teachers complain bitterly about their lot, but at the same time defend the situation they are in and feel that they must do more to 'help'. It's very similiar behaviour to many other serial abuse victims.
