The Ayatollah Buggeri
This book is also well worth a read - lots of stuff on abandoned tube lines and stations turned into military and civil defence facilities during WWII, and then expanded and enlarged during the Cold War. The author claims that there is a 100-mile long Tube line, built in the late 1950s and '60s, linking important government buildings in London (via Underground stations) with a little used airport near Bristol, passing via various government facilities along the M4 corridor, with the construction of the M4 used as cover for building it. The idea was to be able to evacuate political and military bigwigs across the Atlantic if the threat of a nuclear attack on London was imminent. He also claims that the trees lining The Mall are designed to be easily removable so that it could be used as a runway if necessary.
Stay Beautiful
"He also claims that the trees lining The Mall are designed to be easily removable so that it could be used as a runway if necessary". The Germans used the kurfurstendamm in the Battle of Berlin as a runway.
