dryrot
Hi the news is full of the two young Brits shot in Florida. I keep hearing that the murder scene was "low-income", "slum", "ghetto" etc. But checking the reports its all single-detached homes with land... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-13110039 And 4x4s. A thousand times better than an "aspirational executive UK slavebox" How stupid we are...
The Ayatollah Buggeri
Can't find the page now, but if you're referring to that picture of a tree-lined street with bungalows and quite nice cars in the driveway, a Sarasota native wrote on the Telegraph's page covering the murders that the pic was taken in a part of the city that is at least ten miles away from the project where the murders took place. In other words, some lazy journo bought a stock photo from AP or Getty, simply typing 'Sarasota' into their site and assuming that any photo of Sarasota would do. You are obviously not very clued up on how housing and race works in the good ole USA and dont recognise the signs...... Perhaps those unfortunate guys had the same perceptions too....... But the pic yo refer to is on the clip on the BBC website - as you say, tree-lined street. Check the link out in post #1. Are you sure? There's police tape in the street too. I think its the same place?
contractor
The place is a real shithole. Even the google streetview cars wouldn't go down there. This is as close as they would go. God knows what they were doing there.
JustAnotherProle
God knows what they were doing there. There is only one reason for two out of town white guys to be in that type of neighbour hood, and thats to score dope in my opinion. At a stretch they got lost and decided to get out of the car and ask for directions ( so unlikely if they had been there for any length of time, it is just not what you do). Im sure the local cops know this was a dope deal gone bad. Maybe I watch too much The First 48 on CI channel and I'm turning cynical!

They don’t look like stupid kids, and I can’t imagine them going into a bad area looking for dope. I have travelled through many American cities and its easy to quickly end up in a bad area. And even when you end up in a bad area, at first you don’t realise it, because its not like Hackney, or South London. I have gotten lost in Palm Beach, and luckily the local police escorted me out and gave me a warning, they thought I was buying dope as well. Peter Hun
Someone took them there, it wasn't an accident and they executed them without robbing them. A Gang initiation is what the police suspect. How stupid we are... And how stupid are you to believe that houses with gardens and nice cars cannot be in a ghetto.

Yes but even these "ghetto's" have nice wide streets, greenery, gardens and land, and places to park, which was the point of the OP.

Guest sillybear2
Maybe gang related areas have some kind of lucrative secondary source of income? Maybe some CDS's from AIG or something, or TARP money. Anyway, V6 4x4's and trucks aren't expensive in the US, even when new they cost less than your average Ford Focus in the UK. Yes but even these "ghetto's" have nice wide streets, greenery, gardens and land, and places to park, which was the point of the OP. You have to see those amenities in context, they're escape routes if you're running. Anyway, Florida has been the scene of countless land bubbles / ponzi scemes over the years dating right back to the 1920's, there's even roads and vacant plots from the 1970's bubble that were left untouched by the recent boom. http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/09/human_landscapes_in_sw_florida.html

Anyone who has ever been in a different country and done the same would have instantly though the same. Haven't myself of course. Just heard from others... Will have to wait and find out the details of course. However if I had to bet money a drugs link would be firm favourite by a country mile. Sheesh They might well be bigger but cheap US houses are just glorified caravans, really thin-skinned wooden things, they wobble when you walk around in them, seriously. It's pretty hard to compare with over here a lot of our houses are quite nice, although not much of the recent stuff.

Apparently theres lots of developments like the one pictured with an artificial 'lake' in everyones back garden, and as they cant afford to maintain it, they become mosquito ridden swamps in the summer. Malaria here we come?
Mrs Bear
I don’t think its a stretch to think they got lost. Nor do I, but maybe less likely with satnav. My elder and a few friends once got lost in a rough area of New Jersey. She was the daft one who got out of the car at a gas station to ask the way. The bloke she asked said, 'What the f*ck are you folks doing around here? Get the hell out - and head that way!' - and virtually pushed her back into the car. They were a mite more careful to check maps after that.

Roads will be new and little used so probably in great nick.
Azbola
Just to reiterate to the OP... are you mental? The place looks like a trailer park, and these guys were killed by a 16 year old with a machine gun. But because they have a small bit of lawn you think it's better than a flat in the UK? Seriously? Well I think it is fairly reasonable to be honest. Similar stuff happens in the UK. Although not usually by machine gun. Although that does occur. We prefer to use long knives to ram into people's guts repeatedly. Live in a dodgy area in a wee poky flat. Or live in a dodgy area with at least a garden and a detached house. Neither is great - but clearly one has certain advantages over the other...
