People Are Not Spending

Nice sunny day yesterday so I and a friend popped down to Leigh On Sea in Essex . This is a quaint town on the Thames estuary just before Southend . The high street is fillled with independent traders , antique shops, art , mirror and pot shops, bric a brack, one off dress makers, cafes with outdoor space , bars , coffee shops and pubs. Apart form a small Tesco and co op the big boys have not moved in and taken over . On a sunny day this place is always packed it draws growds from all over who enjoy the Sun , views of the estuary and the interesting high street.

Yesterday the place was like a ghost town , shop after shop had no one in them the chairs of the pavement cafes were empty , you had a clear walk up the high street not having to swerve around the on coming people , we found a parking space the second we arrived .

HAVE PEOPLE STOPPED SPENDING ?

Maybe in certain places. We went to theatre yesterday and Central London was absolutely heaving around Covent Garden/Charing Cross. Admittedly many were foreign but many students on their breaks from Uni filling up the pubs and restaurants.

There is a level that recession has not hit.

We were after a mexican restaurant in Bristol last night. I knew there used to be one on Corn Street. It had gone replaced by a bar. A little further up a sign showed another mexican but when we walked up we saw that this was closed with presumed administartators notice in window.

Our walk was past bar after bar over flowing with beer swilling youngsters many in fancy dress from mankini to school girl outfits to wearing condoms on their head filling the pavements outside and blocking the road in several places. it was 7pm. I am now of an age where I would avoid such areas much later at night.

I know this is the way of so many cities (I remember what Nottingham used to be like and prob still is) but the closed restaurants were a shock.

We drove to Longwell Green Chiquitas and had Burrito and Chimichungas. Lovely. B)

It could just be the set of Bank Holiday weekends coming up, people saving the pennies for a bit of an Easter blow out.

Possibly but I too have been noticing this over a period of several months. Ghost Town were the words that came to me when I went for a drive the other day and I've said it several times this year. The roads were deserted, really half expected to see some tumbleweed. I think the long fabled demand destruction has kicked in with petrol at least.

Where is this?

Out on bike, noticing no fall off in traffic at all.

Cheshire Oaks Outlet was heaving today, suns out beaches nearby but no there's tat available at 50% so we must trot down there with the kiddies instead. Fun for all the family and a drive through MacDonalds too what's not to like

But you must have been there too! laugh.gif

I love it when HPC'ers complain about others out shopping, when they are out shopping! rolleyes.gif
