In many cases the yoof won't pay for their courses. Bursaries for poor students and never earning enough to hit repayment thresholds will see to that. I'm confused by the thread title which suggests 70% of courses may be cut. The Guardian article says 'Leaked documents reveal proposals by London Metropolitan University to cut 240 undergraduate courses by autumn 2012.' and 'A report sent to the academic board of London Metropolitan University proposes the institution reduces its number of undergraduate courses to just 160 by autumn 2012'. Cutting 240 from 400 (160 + 240) is a 60% cut not a 70% cut in the number of courses. Unfortunately, many of the crop of recent graduates can't do this sort of complex mental arithmatic. ZeroSumGame Posted April 15, 2011 Share Posted April 15, 2011 I think there's a lot of kids deluding themselves that they can still do one of these, and they'll escape the debt somehow because they'll be earning less than £21K for years to come. £21K is not far below the 'average' wage. In ten years it could be double that. Flip that back 30 years and my first wage was ~£4K and the 'average' was ~£5K. Meantime they are subject to punitive compound interest. CPI+3% or similar. One of the accounting firms came up with some realistic figures for the lifetime of that 2012 onwards student debt and summarised it as £84K! Paying £84K to nominally avoid the dole for three years. okaycuckoo Posted April 15, 2011 Share Posted April 15, 2011 I listened to a R4 piece today about how the fees rearrangement could cost the state alot more than they've pencilled in. Basic point was that the state has guaranteed defaults, and with unis opting for higher fees the projected defaults will be higher than expected. They mentioned Met Uni, which has 30,000 students and has gone for fees of £6000 - the government points out that, on average, this balances out the many small institutions that are maxing out on £9000. Either way, the cost to the taxpayer should be smaller, but not as small as promised. Not sure I got the full point. The presenters were chummy and "amusing", and I was in the middle of an aggravating journey.
