The Great Estate : The Rise And Fall Of The Council Estate.

Recommended Posts

any one watch this ? caught the second half and it was quite interesting

- there is now no community memory of the awful conditions people lived in

in the private rented sector after the war.

- the post war council estates were much valued by the new tenants

moved out of the slum clearances : "we thought we'd died and gone to heaven"

- thamesmead at least , maybe the others, the tennants were vetted and

reference sought and they were very tight ... only working people who could afford to pay were taken on

- at thamesmead , the slum clearance streets were kept together in the new flats

- thamesmead at least had a policy to give preference to sons and daughters of

existing tenants to keep a community feel to it .

- a labour government (I dont know which one) put the kiss of death on it by

changing the criteria from community and permanence to those with greatest

need , and they became temporary with subletting etc .

so quite an interesting prog .
