Southampton Docks

Recommended Posts

Just as an aside, one thing that really pisses me off about Wikipedia is their up-to-the-minute changes of articles. Their article on HMS Astute already documents the shooting as if it were an historical event, even though it occured today and the entry was made today! All this leads to is recentism, where articles in the last few years have more info/weighting than truly historical articles.

On 8 April 2011, one officer was injured and one rating killed in a shooting on board Astute whilst she was berthed at Southampton docks.

As you were.

As the submarine Astute was the one which went aground in the Kyles of Lochalsh in Scotland a year ago yesterday [spooky or wot?], this incident is bound to get her known in the Navy as an unlucky ship. Notoriously superstitious, sailors won't let that epithet lapse for the whole life of this new nuqula submarine!

Edit: historical accuracy.

frankly you don't sound mad enough for a job on a machine capable of annhilating half the planet.

Its a hunter killer sub not a SSBN.

Been on the radio news today.

Anyone know any more, was it an assassination attempt on someone?

Knowing the navy, it was most likely a gay love triangle gone wrong.

After it ran aground, and it's flagship crew put to shame internationally, it may have been a tense past few months on board. A sailor to crack, doesn't surprise me - feel sorry for all concerned.

You reckon I should apply for a job on that Uboat then? :D

I'm surprised you don't want to take a blow torch to it to make a BBQ!

Now reporting that the local Mayor, Council Leader and Council Chief Exec were all present.

Apparently the Council leader, with the help of Chief Exec wrestled the gunman to the ground.

Obviously well worth their allowances and salary.

More disturbingly, how come a member of Her Majesty's armed Forces armed with an automatic rifle manages to shoot two of his crew mates, but can be overpowered by some local Government officials.

Perhaps we should take all the £150k+ chief execs and £50k+ Council leaders and send them to fight Al Qaeda.

If the council leaders actions were as reported I think the award of the George Cross should be given serious consideration.

Probably over something stupid like shore leave.

One report said the shooter had asked to go to the jacks, and was denied this because the visitors had precedence. The vessel has 5 lavatories and a crew of 95.

But he'd just come on duty, so seems unlikely he'd blow off like that.

Sorry.

Looks like it. Then again - you are in a small confined space with a mentalist who has a weapon and is looking like he will shoot people in the face. What are the options ? Curl up in a ball and await the round in the head ? Or dive at the **** and try to wrestle the weapon of him ?

Not there myself of course so no idea of what exactly happened - however I do think many of these moments we hear about of 'heroism' are simply people doing things we probably all would do.

Still - they both deserve a pint.

The police have siezed the sub as part of their investigation.

Under the Police Property Act 1897,

[(2A) The regulations may also provide that where, in the case of property other than money—

(a ) the property has remained in the possession of the police for a year,

(b ) the police would under the regulations have power to sell the property,

(c ) in the opinion of the relevant authority, the property can be used for police purposes, and

(d ) the relevant authority determine, in such manner as may be prescribed by the regulations, that the property is to be retained by the authority,

the relevant authority is to become the owner of the property on the making of the determination or at such later time as the regulations may specify.

So, in certain circumstances, the Southampton Police could soon have their very own nuclear submarine. That would look really cool emerging from the depths with a flashing blue light.

Though I'll think twice about taking the ferry from Cowes to Southampton if that should happen!

Knowing the navy, it was most likely a gay love triangle gone wrong.

According to the Wail, the individual who claimed his fifteen minutes had previously changed his name to Moondogg the Rapper, and had a sideline writing songs with violent lyrics. Given the less-than-PC attitude that many rap stars have exhibited towards the rear-gunning fraternity, maybe his victim made an advance he was later given cause to regret? Anyway, the less said about the wisdom of allowing such an individual even to have a gun, let alone his finger anywhere near the button, the better. What next? Gary Glitter being offered a job as the headmaster of a creche?
