We Don't Want More People From Sheffield Having Cheap Holidays': What Old Etonian Tory Minister Told Boris

David Cameron’s top policy guru has sparked anger after declaring that the government should do nothing to help ordinary people take holidays.

Cabinet Office minister Oliver Letwin told fellow Tories: ‘We don’t want more people from Sheffield flying away on cheap holidays.’

The comments were made in a private meeting with London Mayor Boris Johnson, who was pushing for the government to build new airports.

The outburst from gaffe-prone Mr Letwin, a millionaire and Old Etonian, will fuel claims that senior members of the government are out of touch with ordinary voters.

Mr Johnson revealed the comment, but not who made it, at a recent meeting. He said: ‘I was absolutely scandalised the other day to hear a Government minister tell me he did not want to see more families in Sheffield able to afford cheap holidays.’

Maybe ordinary voters don't want people from Sheffield going on cheap holidays either? :P

Mr Letwin will be happy to know I'm not going anywhere this year, although doesn't he think we are punished enough with garbage that passes for football in the City. If the govt wants to interrogate/torture any terrorist give them a season ticket to both clubs they'll be confessing in no time.

Although I doubt ordinary people will be able to holiday any where near Oliver.

as holiday operators cut backon holidays for sale, due to falling demand, it seems Boris "250k is chickenfeed" jonson feels that a recovery is imminent and more capacity needed at airports.

Fingers

Ivan, maybe you should be considering the role of the Banking and Investments industry in creating difficult circumstances. Under Gordon Brown's stewardship of teh economy in particular teh UK did very well until the sub-prime debacle which originated in teh US fuelled by Banking had its deletrious effect on the UK. Even then the Conservatives could not get elected without the support of the LibDems. What we see now is a resurrection of Thatcherite economics and we all know where that got us. Letwin's comments are probably echoed by many in the Govt especially on teh Tory benches. The Conservative Party is fuelled by the politics of Class division and will do anything to widen the gap between the Rich and Poor. Regrettably many of teh non-rich fall for their poorly evidenced rhetoric.

Genius comment here from fingers, non of this was apparently Brown's fault, although they do appear to have a problem with the word the.

It would just be one of those "we're all in it together" moments.

If they want price inflation they should change the inflation target and get Mr Mervyn (groundhog) King to do his job and target the target - or get someone else who'll do the job or do away with the target altogether.

They must have a thing about Sheffield. It used to have a good level of employment in the steel industry until they all got to work on it.

Apparently these days it's mainly a sports and technology city so beware if you're in those sectors
