Great Travel Writing

Recommended Posts

Can't go amiss with a bit of Bill Bryson, really.

I like "The Lost Continent" and "Neither Here nor There".

The BBC 7 radio adaptations are quite good too, Kerry Shale does a great Bill Bryson.

Dervla Murphy, amazing woman, fantastic writing style. I can particularly recommend In Ethiopia with a Mule. She's nearly 80 now, but still going strong.

Here's some more about her:

A lot of the best travel writing tends to be by unknown victorians/edwardians - and is nearly always cheaply available at the back of second-hand bookshops. One of my favourite accidental finds was Through Persia on a Side Saddle by Ella Sykes. Also highly enjoyable was A Gringo in Mananaland by Harry L Foster.
