The Masked Tulip
Royal Navy personnel taking part in the Libyan intervention and soldiers fighting in Afghanistan will be told next week that they could be sacked under defence cuts, The Daily Telegraph can disclose. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/defence/8422839/Forces-serving-in-Libya-to-be-told-you-face-the-sack.html Military commanders from the Army and Navy will inform serving members of the Armed Forces on Monday that they could be among more than 2,000 uniformed personnel to be made redundant in September. Those eligible for the redundancy programme starting next week will include some soldiers presently completing tours in Afghanistan. Seamen currently aboard warships and submarines in the Mediterranean supporting operations in Libya will also be told they could be included. The Eagle
Soldiers have always been nothing but cannon fodder fighting for the interests of the rich, all the charade around it (parades, honours, moments of silence, poppies, patriotism, etc.) is purely to make people believe otherwise. Most service personnel are only to happy bear the risk in maiming and killing - with sanction from the State. Even more are happy to take redundancy payments. Don't shed any tears for them or they will think you are *****. Edited April 2, 2011 by Alan B'Stard MP

ken_ichikawa
I was actually eying up a Royal Navy job yesterday as a shipbased chef, it wasn't so bad £17K, not great but considering it includes accomodation for 6-9 months of the year. It's not bad, put your stuff into storage and just go. You'll be one of the lads. The non-pay benefits of the forces are still worth considering. Bear in mind that you could be ordered to retrain and end up driving on a convoy somewhere, so it's not all rum and roses.
albimac
You have to remember that the Army, RAF & Navy can be very different organisations, that attract/employ people with different attitudes, intelligence & maturity. Not all service personnel, actively seek the opportunity to hurt another human being.

Lagarde's Drift
My low swimming ability and dislike of mindlessly bowing to authority are at odds with any naval type work. Swimming skill doesn't matter, even the Fijians manage. You'll be ok if you can overcome it with training, barring that, pure physical fitness as you thrash through. If you're not willing to bow to authority though, then it may not be for you.

He does sometimes do that thing where he'll tell you half of what he's thinking and then feel smug that you aren't able to understand him. Shame really as he often seems to be on an interestingly creative tangent.

retz
But, but...they're advertising on tele about Apprenticeships and all that. Is this some sort of evil trick? Get rid of the people who actually know what they're doing and replace them with new blood to save themselves a few quid? Sounds like some of the companies I have worked for... All the non combat non cannon fodder roles are over subscribed. Had a word with an ex Navy bloke who cleaned bogs on the ark royal. Its always been this way, because the training ship HMR Raleigh has a limited capacity. While all the cannon fodder roles you'll go through selection and training pretty darned quick and end up on the front lines PDQ! The rum ration has a few conspiracy theories about this, where to expidite the process you join as cannon fodder and then transfer to your desired position.... after a couple of tours as cannon fodder of course. The Eagle
They can always contract out the killing of civilians to Gaddafi. Why Gaddafi? Blackwater (now called XE services since the reputation of their original name had suffered too much due to all their civilian killing scandals in Iraq) is far more experienced at that. Gaddafi is an innocent puppy compared to them.
Saver
You would think that the MOD would wait until they get back. could be a ruse to get the government to give them some money - all they have to do is say look how demoralised these guys are, if you want the intervention to work you better guarantee their jobs.
