Don't know if anyone else has posted this but Channel 4 on Tuesday evening has a programme on, according to the blurb I read, collapsing house prices in the Sun looking at people who regret buying homes abroad.

DOCUMENTARY: Housetrapped in the Sun

Channel: Channel 4

Date: Tuesday 27th September 2005

Time: 20:00 to 21:00

Property expert Andrew Winter travels to Europe on a mission to help the British owners of three properties for whom the dream of a new life in the sun has turned into a nightmare. One hundred and fifty thousand Brits bought abroad last year and 100,000 are planning to go in the next six months. Across the continent a real estate gold rush is fuelling soaring prices and it seems everyone wants a slice. But there's a property time bomb waiting to go off. There are big risks buying abroad, whether it's in a stable western market or an emerging eastern economy. Right now foreign property is as much as a third overvalued, a particularly tough proposition for sellers. Andrew meets homeowners dealing with stagnating markets, property confiscation, legal battles and subsidence. The programme also reveals the results of a specially commissioned survey of 6,000 people about other foreign property nightmares, from frustrating bureaucracy to confusing property law and language difficulties.

"Right now foreign property is as much as a third overvalued, a particularly tough proposition for sellers"

Now call me callious but IF THESE PEOPLE WANT TO COME HOME - then drop their price by 33% and it MAY sell.

I can guarantee that they will still make a profit on the property. If they hold out for a silly price - ****** to em!!!

Cant wait to scream at the screen when this is on!!!

This is a wonderful example of build 'em up and knock 'em down and the huge and frightening power of TV, first they spend years making endless programmes like "a place in the sun" with promises of new life abroad and DIY guides in the form of Relocation x3 and it gets to the stage today where TV literally compels 300k people to leave each year each chasing the mirage.

Now for fun part, having largely constructed this mess it now feeds upon itself with lots of TV programmes questioning the obvious sustainability and absudity of every Britisher running a foreign B&B so they can take in guests from the UK whilst they in turn look for property they can turn into a B&B themselves, and so the cycle continues.

Just shows you what power TV has over peoples' lives, if it can get them to upsticks and leave the country it may have self-correcting hari-kari capabilities.

Btw, last month Trev did a programme about the niceties of property dealings in Spain and Northern Cyprus and their curious definition of private ownership, it's the sort of thing that makes the legalities and shortcomings of the West Bank look civilised.
