Uk Census......

Recommended Posts

The Office of National Statistics has awarded the UK National Census Contract to the American Arms Manufacturer, Lockheed Martin. Eighty percent of whose business is with the US Department of Defence and other Federal Government agencies.

Lockheed Martin sits at No 1 on the Pogo Federal Contractor Misconduct database, with more than 50 alleged cases of corruption, fraud, bribery, environmental damage and discrimination, there's worse to come. As a US-owned company, under the post-9/11 USA Patriot Act, Lockheed Martin can be forced to hand over any private data in its possession to the US government and/or the CIA.

This might concern you because:

The Census rules mean that every household will be legally obliged to provide a wide range of personal information that will be handled by the chosen contractor.

Lockheed Martin produces missiles and land mines which are being used in Afghanistan and Iraq and which are illegal in many countries.

They also focus on intelligence and surveillance work and boast of their ability to provide 'integrated threat information' that combines information from many different sources.

New questions in the 2011 Census will include information about income and place of birth, as well as existing questions about languages spoken in the household and many other personal details.

This information would be very useful to Lockheed Martin's intelligence work, and fears that the data might not be safe could lead to many people not filling in their Census forms.

Census Alert is therefore campaigning to stop Lockheed Martin from being given the contract. http://petitions.num...k/census-alert/

The campaign is supported by the Green Party, politicians from Plaid Cymru,Labour and the Scottish National Party, and others opposed to the arms trade and concerned about personal privacy.

We are not opposed to the Census itself. Aggregated, the information collected is important in allocating resources to local authorities and public services.

But personal privacy is important too, and we are concerned that Lockheed Martin's involvement could undermine public confidence in the process and lead to inaccurate data being collected.

Even if we discount the possibility that Lockheed Martin could or would do anything untoward with our personal data, and even if we ignore accusations of the government selling on our census data to third parties in the past, the fact remains that £150m of taxpayers' money has been directly channelled into a company that profits from and enables war and destruction. That is unacceptable.

Whats Really Going on here? Mmmmmmm?

The online census was very easy to complete took about 5 minutes. Unless your trying to avoid tax it did not seem too intrusive.

Not sure why i should care.

Yes theyre a private american company, isnt that scary

Yes, they sell guns too, really scary as well.

Dont see how any of that impacts on their ability to deliver a census.

Those who do not complete the census risk being prosecuted while those giving false answers face being fined. o.gif

The Conservatives said the nature of the some of the questions amounted to a breach of privacy.

"An increasingly invasive and intrusive census will erode public support, cost more and result in a less accurate survey," said shadow Cabinet Office minister Nick Hurd.

"These 'bedroom snoopers' are yet another sign of how the Labour government has no respect for the privacy of law-abiding citizens."

The details of the census must be approved by Parliament in advance.

So why have the Tories sent out the same Census questions then?

I did it online the other day as well, was very easy and quick.

Who cares if they gave the contract to Lockheed Martin? Who else would do it? One of the ever so competent UK based consultancy / outsourcing companies?

The constant barrages of f@rkin phone calls from phillipines and indian call centres, who have been sold my information by an American Company, when a UK company would not be allowed to is a right pain in the @rse.

And I just dont trust the f@rkers. LM for instance manufacture cluster bombs....which are banned for good reason.
