Tv Property Porn Is Out Of Synch

So if you know you're going to blow a gasket - why watch?

Also, by watching you'll ensure they keep making that guff.

So vote with your pinkies and abstain from property porn.

Do your blood pressure a favour, and contribute to removing Kirsty I'm Not Thick As A Plank It's Dyslexia Allsop from our screens forever.

A bit harsh towards carpenters dont you think, if the carpenter you mentioned was middle aged or above then chances are they served a 5 to 6 year apprentiship at the start of their career, yes being a carpenter is a career, apprentice, to tradesman, to site supervisor, to site manager, to contracts manager, to projects manager and all the way up to the MD of large building firms. Thats the general route if you want to go all the way to the top in the building game.

Its a very sad state of affairs when a man or woman who works in every type of bad weather and works in probably the most dangerous industry there is can be perceived not to be in a career. Could you imagine working this past january in temperatures around minus ten all day long whilst having to make decisions that could cost thousands upon thousands of pounds to fix if got wrong (its not easy to think straight when you are in physical pain from being so cold and wet) and then add to that the fact that you are surrounded by life threatening machinery and situations that could end youre so called career in an instant.

Good post

There are too many 'non' degrees these days that masquerade as qualifications.. . . . .. imo.

What makes me laugh about all these property programes is nobody ever buys anything, even though it is everything and more that they ask for.....but they nearly always over estimate the prices, saying 'really, that's good, it only costs that' etc.....I don't think they have the money to buy....it's all an illusion. ;)

I was watching Kirsty and Phil the other night (thanks, girlfriend) and it struck me that they are trying rather too hard to have little one-twos between them, ie hope that making it entertaining will mask the dire state of the housing market.

True to form, Kirsty's negotiation skills shone through as she got the couple the house for... their absolute maximum budget.

The place had been on the market for 2 years.

This pair having steadily been shifting their screen personas from hard-nosed property 'investment' gurus (stop laughing at the back) to tv's 'favourite couple' double act. Ant 'n Dec; Richard 'n Judy; 'n Phil 'n Kirsty.

Some deluded producer has convinced them that 'comedy bickering' moments; arch voice-overs; tired mild innuendos; cut-away intimacies and faux disputes will draw indulgent, affectionate smiles of recognition from every couple in the land, and keep this loveable pair tight in the nation's affections.

It seems it's all they've got left.

We've seen through the illusory 'expertise', and the risible negotiating skills. We've seen the absurdity of Kirstie's simplistic mantra that 'property only goes up'. We've seen Phil's business acumen at work with his own firm. We're sick to the back teeth with 'investment potential', 'kerb appeal' and 'foot on the property ladder', and most of us know someone who is now in the shit because they believed what these tv folk told them.

Dylan, Bowie and Madonna might have pulled off the trick of reinventing themselves in changing times and tastes. This pair won't.

As house prices slowly fall, pulling more and more into negative equity, debt and repossession, this particular double act will be increasingly seen for the dangerous, 'aspirational' absurdity it always was.

And given that both have 2 years to run on £400K each per annum contracts with C4, it will be interesting to see at what point the public says 'For God's sake - go away!'

This is how it usually goes for me:

Me:"lets watch [insert name of property porn programme]"

mrs ST: "OK"

Me: "What! - they have a budget of £450K and he is a carpenter!!! - why the f did i bother getting a degree and a 'career'?"

mrs ST: "stop getting wound up all the time"

Me: "I hope they die"

mrs ST: "why the f did i marry you?"

Haha. :)

I lurk constantly and rarely post. I read this and LOL'd and showed it to my other half who burst into hysterical laughter.. :)

Saw an episode of "Build, Buy, Restore" over the weekend, from 2006.

Couple with two kids in a two-bedroom house, believed they had a budget of £220k (including equity in current house), presenter pulls out a figure from an envelope they really could borrow of £335k. So off they set looking at options, turns out they choose the build option, at £380k after being persuaded to somehow manage to overcome the £45k shortfall through bridging loans, re-mortgaging at appropriate point etc.... The presenter was really pushing them to stretch themselves. He then let slip it would be an IO mortgage.

How the F can they gey away with that ? Actually felt sorry for the couple.

TV property porn has a lot to answer for. It definitely helped fuel the bubble.

I remember the early 2000's when almost every channel was full of it.

The HPC meme is spreading ...

Mindful, perhaps, that no one in Britain has bought or sold a house in the past 18 months, Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer, presenters of the venerable Location, Location, Location, are branching out with a holiday programme called – go on, have a guess – Vacation, Vacation, Vacation. Is there no end to this partnership's versatility? What else might they present?

I guess as more young journalists start coming through the ranks, the strength of support on our side will increase.

Don't hold your breath. I met a surprisingly young producer recently - looked about 18 - just out uni but an impressive list of credits plus wife in Chelsea tractor(working for him) and sprog. No doubt IMO already bought flashy London pad already so major vested Interest in HPI.

Oh god another one of them just blamed thatcher for this property mess, that paper is making me crazy. I'm starting to think that maybe thatcher has the power of gray skull and she can make everything alright.

It is quite incredible for such a lasting legacy, I have friends who serisouly think that she is responsible for the current cuts to the public spending. It is like the last 20 years simply did not exist. Labour had 13 years in power but this seems to have passed them all by and Thatcher is still at the heart of their arguements right now - oh and they are all very much the John Lewis shopping champagne socialist brigage quite frankly they make me sick, pulling in significant public sector salaries but not really giving two hoots to actually helping those they claim to want to.

Simple really.

People like those who you mention have no idea of politics or finance. They have a deep seated identification with the Labour Party because of something that happened to their Great Gran in 1926 or some time about then and have been brought up to hate the Conservatives who are all toffs and enjoy keeping hard working families down.

They do not know what the deficit is and confuse it with the debt, ably assisted by Labour Politicians who either do understand and deliberately confuse people, or more likely do not understand it themselves. They believe that there is no need whatsoever for cuts because Labour told them so. It's just normal Nasty Tory Policy.

Many of them are too young to really remember Thatcher, but as their elders knee jerk blame her for their own failings, so do they. Apparently, for centuries, mothers threatened naughty children with 'Old Noll' (Oliver Cromwell) so I suppose the left will blame Thatcher for the next 100 years of leftie **** ups.

Next time a leftie tells you 'It started in America' ask him if Margaret Thatcher was there too.

Best "Escape to the Country" I've seen was one this week, a curmudgeonly couple who were moving because their back garden backed onto 8 other properties all of which had children and dogs in the garden.. they wanted some peace and quiet.. although her current house did have a 21ft kitchen (a rather precise fact that she mentioned a few times throughout the program as her benchmark)

Quite how this less than sharp couple had amassed £450,000 to spend on a house remained a mystery, however their list of requirements included a double garage, large kitchen (as large as her 21ft kitchen remember..), not new build with a sizeable garden for "his rose garden"

The very patient presenter showed them around one house, dismissed near instantly because "it had a table in the kitchen".. the presenter gobsmacked said ".. erm.. you could have it without a table .. ".. but no, their mind was set, they didn't want a kitchen with a table in it..

Anyway, they finally went for a new build, with a tiny kitchen and a single garage and no garden.

Except they didn't, because they hadn't sold their house yet..

There's 45 minutes of my life I'll never get back.

I'm glad the sickness of property porn is still around - it educates. Not a single person who watches any of these shows is thinking the twisted thoughts that the presenter hoped for (profit! - unwarranted gains!! - pension alternative!!! - bleed the "young professionals"!!!), they're thinking - fiscal peril: don't ever buy from anyone who has ever so much as thought of watching this show, they're all bonkers!

Long may they keep showing these property boom mania programmes, they stand proud as a warning. Caveat Emptor!

Edit: pension alternative!!!

Yes, and probably like film the artform will mutate. Horror becomes torture porn etc

Perhaps we'll see property torture porn.

I've not yet seen any of the empty homes one.

But it reminds me of pathfinder which they were bleating on about today on the news.

Pathfinder seemed to be a criminal waste of money. What did it do? Just leave homes empty for 9 years.
