interestrateripoff
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/06/business/06digi.html?_r=1&ref=business HONG KONG residents can enjoy astoundingly fast broadband at an astoundingly low price. It became available last year, when a scrappy company called Hong Kong Broadband Network introduced a new option for its fiber-to-the-home service: a speed of 1,000 megabits a second — known as a “gig” — for less than $26 a month. Just think of all the high quality porn that can be viewed at that speed and simultaneously
ken_ichikawa
What the article says.... Also a killer part of HK is that the roads don't have to be dug up to install new stuff. Instead they bring a crane on the back of a lorry and lift the concrete slabs which make up the road surfaces in most urban areas.... pop the cable in and put it down again. Heh back in 1996 I cut my name into a concrete slab in Tai Po, to this day it is still there.
rxe
I don't get the economics. GigE costs proper money to switch and provide content for. I don't see how they can do it for $26 a month.

Pauly_Boy
You'll find this happening here. You can get super fast access, but they'll start charging per gigabyte downloaded, similar to the mobile networks.

But for some reason, governments here are banned from just getting on with major infrastructure projects that would give the country as a whole a significant edge. Probably because it wouldn't involve enough cash for financiers, consultants, lawyers and the rest.. We'll probably end up with FTTC (Fibre to the curb) which gives you an order of magnitude less and is vastly harder to upgrade. And, of course, some bright spark will decide to save 3% of project costs by using low quality fiber. Oh, and it'll be locked into a 25-year PFI contract making upgrades, practically certain within 15 years, ultra expensive.
