Pauly_Boy
I just saw an advert saying the Ed Milliband is going to be giving a speech on family debt at 1030 on Sky News. This will interesting, will he admit that labour cocked up or will he blame everyone else other than Blair, Brown and Balls?

interestrateripoff
Family debt it's all the fault of the coalition, Labour allowed responsible hard working families to run up the debt and now the nasty coalition won't allow people to pay it back as they are making cut backs. At least, not blame through the front door. But he doesn't need to. Just blame it on the bankers, and then on the coalition for the fact that the bankers are still obscenely rich. Blame through the back door. Not that I'm anticipating what he'll actually say.

Some comparative data on that: Bank for International Settlements (BIS) report. UK Total Debt (Gov.+ Households + Companies) / GDP still going up. (IMO only partially explained by the UK GDP reduction of around 5% since the crisis IIRC.) First solid data that I am aware of since the McKinsey report showed total debts up to 2008. This BIS report comes all the way to 2010. Ed Miliband just said that blaming Labour's over spending is a myth, the deficit didn't cause the financial crisis, it was the financial crisis that caused the deficit. He ignores the bubble-inflating phase. he tries to airbrush it from history. His problem is, the data is clear, as the chart above shows. This data/fact is now part of historical records. Our problem is: despite this data/fact, Labour just got 60% in a by-election. . Edited March 5, 2011 by Tired of Waiting

Yeah, but Barnsley isn't exactly the centre of free enterprise. It's exactly the type of place that has large numbers of people claiming benefits, who instantly take a disliking to anyone telling them to 'get a job'. The coalition are ruining their easy life. Labour are on for a landslide, Mervyn King is right about that much at least. Tories missed a trick by not letting them have the coalition, though they got to steal lots of stuff I suppose which is the whole point of running for office.

Maybe. I dunno, events have a way of unfolding unpredictably, most especially in periods of extreme trauma. Unexpected things happen and trend lines don't hold up. In 4 years a million things can happen. I have to say that I have said to Mrs B that we might as well get our ducks in a row to be gone by 2015, so on balance I tend to agree. Injin
Did he point out that it was labour, who helped the bubble blow up, that caused the financial crisis? That isn't true. This crisis has been 8 decades in the making. The guys who went off the gold standard and bailed the banks out by going to paper are responsible. Labout just carried on a fine tradition of fiat money messing.
