Government, banks set to unveil lending and pay deal - sources
:09, Wednesday 9 February 2011
LONDON (Reuters) - The country's banks are set to agree a deal with the government on increasing business lending and disclosure on pay for top earners and aim to announce a deal on Wednesday, people familiar with the matter said.
The talks, dubbed "Project Merlin," will see the top five banks agree to lend about 190 billion pounds gross to businesses this year, the sources said.
Banks (SBK.NX - news) will agree to pay lower bonuses for 2010 than 2009 and also disclose the pay of the top five paid executives in addition to the most senior executives on the board.

How will we know if they are fibbing or not?

And what is the point creating more debt for businesses who are already slowing down and, in some cases, about to shut down? The economy is contracting which means banks should be creating LESS debt by encouraging saving.
