My Computer Is On It's Last Legs

Recommended Posts

As the topic suggests my computer is on it's last legs.

The laptop I am using has 3 missing keys, battery knackered and I infected one of the user accounts with a virus that won't go away!

I have an iPhone4 that I love and am considering the bottom of the range iMac 21.5inch but would like to future proof it a bit by replacing the iCore3 with an iCore5 - is that possible.

If someone suggests that I could build a better system for half that with a screen then you'll be volunteering to build it for me gratis other than the cost of the parts as I would have no idea where to start. :P

Stay away from boysfood.

That is all. :D

lol! I had to google that. It's not porn honest ;) I went on to a baby names forum, a pop-up came up with a count down advising me my computer was about to self-destuct in 10seconds unless I clicked on it and for some inexplicable reason I did

Thanks for the link. This is something I might like to consider only if I can run the phone though my television. Is that possible ? TV is about 6 months old LG 32" LED backlit TV ??

Sherwick:

My wife isn't convinced either, especially since I was booted out of our bedroom in her second trimester

If you take the hard drive out (swap the jumpers to make it a slave if it has jumpers) and plug it into a clean machine, virus scan the hard drive should remove the virus properly. A virus relies on being started by the OS upon bootup so provided you dont run any software from the slave drive you will be safe to virus scan it.

MS Security essentials is a free solution for AV and spyware/malware if you dont have it and depending on your OS ie XP SP3 and newer.

Keyboards and batteries can be replaced depending on who made it.

Thanks... this helps too. It's a Dell XPS M1530 laptop. I have replaced the HD and done a reinstall although the system refuses to accept the MS office suite via the original key. I have MS Security essentials installed.

Have you tried another battery in the laptop? Does it charge?

it doesn't take a charge and the computer switches off the very millisecond my daughter pulls the power cable out. I've now had a look on eBay and I can see replacement keyboards on there for £13.

edit: the battery was on it's way out. It's a nine cell and went from 3hrs on a full charge to 20minutes very quickly.

The problem with problems like this is that the battery or the board could be knackered..you could end up with a load of parts you've just bought are now useless...

Run Av Program and run Malwarebytes (it is good and free) - good chance that will get rid of it.

Run both the above in Safe Mode.

Edit

Can get a lot of PC for that sort of money - lot of budget left for one of the very best monitors and wahtever style/type keyboard and mouse you wanted. This ones is a bit warts and all - wonder what sort of misalignment it has? But still the same argument for a PC holds.

3.0Ghz Core 2 Extreme (Quad core) Q6850 Processor. Dual Nvidia GeForce 8800GTX SLI DDR3 Graphics Cards and Physx Ageia Card resulting in a smoother gaming experience and additional visual effects. Creative labs SB0770 Sound Card, H2C Liquid Ceramic cooling system.

Included with a fresh install of Windows 7 Home 64bit ( No added software or anti-virus)

The XPS legend continues with new key components and options that deliver a superb blend of epic power and screaming performance. With this kind of computing muscle at your disposal, you won’t just play the game – you’ll change it. And the XPS 720 looks as strong as it performs. Horizontal heat-venting hints at the hot-rod underneath, while the chiseled, aluminum case features LED highlights in your choice of color.

Cosmetic: Slight scratches on case, Slightly miss aligned case

thanks for the link. it's a good find but i'm looking for a smaller form factor. I'm going to drag this computer along with some fixes suggested here and see what the ipad2 is like as I belive that will be a duo-core, couple with a wireless keyboard and TV cable this would be ideal. :D

Thanks all. I've ordered a new keypad (£13) and will do as suggested, slave the HD and virus kill it that way. I'm holding out for the iPad2 to pair up with a wireless keyboard. Roll on release day and camping outside the apple store :D

One other thing I've noticed with some of my customers machines who have an iphone. The Apple software (itunes/iphone) when installed on windows machines slow it up, so if you go into control panel, administrative tools, services and switch all the apple software to manual instead of automatic then only when you use the apple software will these services start up.

As these programs phone home it slows up the workstations that have to go through MS ISA server (http://www.microsoft.com/forefront/edgesecurity/isaserver/en/us/) whilst the software tries to connect to the net.

again good advice. i'm not very technical however I can see what iTunes does to my dual core CPU in task manager - running in the background it uses 70-100% of the processing power continuously.

iMac' has arrived.

Base model 21.5" iCore5 2.5GHz

If anyone can assist with my niggles that would be greatly appreciated :D

How do I get my iTunes music over from my laptop (CD/DVD drive is defunct)? USB memory stick?

I used DVD decrypter and Handbrake on my laptop to get movies onto my iPhone, can't see a mac o/s version of DVD decrypter... what's the mac alternative?

Any recommendations for photo/video editing software - nothing fancy or expensive (photos from canon 40d / video 720line helmet cam for YouTube (add subtitles and soundtracks)??

Which USB TV dongle to connect with a digibox if there is one?

Anything else I should put on there ?

Thanks

:D:D:D
