Whistleblowing MP shops SIX more colleagues to police over expenses fraud

Last updated at 2:26 AM on 16th January 2011

Whistleblower: The MP is said to be disgruntled that his own expenses claims were questioned

Six more MPs are facing fraud investigations over their expenses after being ‘shopped’ to police by a disgruntled Labour colleague, it was reported last night.

The MP was said to be angry that he was unfairly singled out over his own expenses claims.

According to reports, the six politicians – who cannot be named for legal reasons – include one ex-Labour Cabinet Minister, two Labour MPs, one Liberal Democrat and two Tories.

The whistle-blowing MP is from a Northern constituency and is not one of four politicians awaiting trial.

It is said to be the first time that an MP has accused colleagues of making false claims.

Last night, Scotland Yard declined to comment on the latest reports, but said so far six files relating to parliamentarians’ expenses had been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service resulting in charges.

Some 10 files have been handed to the Crown Prosecution Service by the Met's economic and specialist crime unit, of which six led to charges and two to no further action being taken, while two others remain under consideration.

Former Labour MP David Chaytor was jailed for 18 months earlier in January after admitting false accounting, while Barnsley Central MP Eric Illsley has announced he will step down from Parliament after entering a guilty plea to dishonestly claiming more than £14,000. He will be sentenced next month.

According to the Sunday Times, the MP who passed on his colleagues' names has been the subject of a police investigation, but is not one of the four politicians awaiting trial.

He has reportedly highlighted claims by colleagues which were similar to his own expenses for household expenditure like council tax, maintenance and utility bills.

Today's report comes ahead of the opening on Monday of the trial of Lord Taylor of Warwick, a former Conservative peer, who faces six charges of false accounting relating to 2006 and 2007. He pleaded not guilty at an earlier hearing.

MPs fiddling their expenses is no crime.

MPs real crime is to failing to regulate the banks............. banks like J P Morgan (J P Morgue?). Apparently it is to give its 10000 employees an AVERAGE bonus payment of £230,000 each.

Mind you, I did read this in the DM so is most likely untrue??

If we could choose who had done something wrong, hoping it results in getting rid of them, my choices would be:

Gordon Brown

Ed Balls & Alison Seabeck

Chris Huhne

Davlie Cameron, Osborne Osborne & Robert Syms (I know it says 2 Tories but I couldn't narrow it down below 3)

I hope I haven't missed a "good" one out.

Correct. A few will get multi-million pound payouts, more with get under a million, most will get a couple of months salary and some will get nothing at all. The average is completely misleading.

I think we should offer cash rewards to the ones who shop their colleagues......that's what they were planning on doing to joe public WRT dustbin items in wrong bins/5mm over the plimsol line etc.

poetic justice if ever there was.
